which school do you think is best
Author: Kristol

Hello everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well. I was thinking about graduate school. I would like to get my masters in performance. Right now I am thinking of auditioning in Julliard, Eastman, Manhattan School, and Mannes. Which do you think has a better teacher and program?

I'd want to go to Eastman. Don't ask me, I just would! They have a phenomenal Wind Ensemble and I don't know, there one of the top programs in the U.S. I wouldn't go to Juilliard because I don't care for it. I don't know enough about Mannes, but it really depends on the person. I just am biased towards Eastman.

hehehe. What a troll ... I remember this exact question from a few weeks ago ...

You're looking at a gradute program and asking us for advice? After your 4 years at UNCG you should have a great idea about who you'd like to study with. If you don't - then perhaps you need to re-evaluate what you've learned over those four years.

Have you contacted the teachers at those fione schools? Have you checked on how their students turned out? Does their idea of music complement your own? Will you have a problem with their temperament? What are their expectations of a masters in performance?

All of these questions and more should be answered by meeting your prospective teacher, not by asking us. Considering that their all in the same general location, have you thought about a "pilgrimage" to the area to meet with the teachers you're considering?

I'm sure my friend (and perhaps your teacher) Kelly Burke can help you in your quest.

This suggestion will probably invite sharp criticism but I honestly believe it, and reflecting on my playing career the past 25 years is exactly what I would've done given a second chance. Assuming you have what it takes to become a professional clarinetist and your goal is to become a working musician, (why else would anyone get a Masters in performance?) I'd include in your desicion process bagging the MM altogether. Do your homework before choosing a teacher, MENTORING, musical leadership and accumulating the most on-the-job experience early on most often yields the greatest and quickest return ... not another wall hanging. Consider instead, investing the time and would be tuition finding/studying with the best teacher for you personally and stick to them like glue. Specifically, one who actively “prepares” their students for a professional playing career, boasts a proven record of turning out successful classical players inspiring to and playing in top orchestras, ensembles and/or recording artists. A teacher who is/was in those tight circles (retired and still teaching) that can help you break into the industry and rub elbows with right people at the highest levels. Move to where they're at, plant your flag, make a committment to your horn and get down to serious business.

MMs in "performance" are an excellent and worthy endeavor, but what comes out of the bell behind the screen is what gets the gig NOT an impressive resume. Career positioning, who you've studied with, breadth of experience, playing ability and what organizations you've performed with are the keys.

The absolute best. v/r

Thank you for your insight

No, Bill, I don't think it's being rude. A troll is a question someone asks and then that person just sists back and watches the flames go by.

A question such as that one, put out by someone currently in college with a fine clarinet teacher, doesn't deserve being considered a good question. Especially since it's identical to one just put out recently. If my son, studying clarinet performance, asked such a question here I'd have to ask him why the heck he was sticking with his current teacher if that teacher couldn't help him with some direction, and why didn't he get his butt in gear and go visit with those teachers to see if they were "sympatico" with him.

But I'd be a lot less polite with him than I was here. Someone in their 20s needs to start thinking for themselves, and ask the right people - people who know their strengths and weaknesses personally, people who can advise them on a one-on-one basis.

In my opinion, of course.

I would go to Eastman if I wanted to go and sell CDs at Tower when I graduated. As far as Juilliard goes, I was just over there and heard a great clarinet recital. Morales teaches there and by gosh I personally have not heard anything bad about the guy. One of his students recently won the Phoenix job. Everyone in the city says he is just scary. Listen to the teacher...listen to the students. I heard a student of Carmine Campione and said, this guy can phrase! So what did I do, I went to Campione at CCM! A school name means little. If I could pack up and move to LA today, I would go see Gilad.

That was my point ... the same person asking the same question twice before. A number of people tried to answer honestly to help out before, but somehow whoever it is out there likes to hear themselves talk.

uncg.edu... wouldn't that mean that they're connected in a school network? Could be coincidence.

"I would go to Eastman if I wanted to go and sell CDs at Tower when I graduated."

Yes, but keep in mind that Juilliard is just across the street from Tower, so it would be a better choice.

There is the issue that some teachers can be biased, i.e., not like a certain other teacher for various reasons, (including personal), and not recommend that person even though he or she might be a good future teacher for the student. If a student only asked their current teacher who to study with, this issue can be a problem, I think. Isn't it good to get feedback from a lot of different sources, including students of the teacher you're interested in, the teacher his or herself, and, why not the BB?

The students of and the teachers themselves are certainly good (if not the best!) sources of information. However, most if not all will not volunteer any sort of information in a public place since it is so personal.

By the way, I DO sell cd's at a Barnes & Noble, and I DO have a Master's in performance, from Northwestern. I got it 11 years ago, when the good guys were there, but I must say that it was while I was there that I realized I didn't want an orchestral career. I need opportunities for more input that orchestral playing offers, and I was lucky to find jobs playing Balkan music.
