 What ELSE do you play?
Author: David Pegel
Date:   2002-04-12 22:46

Sometimes I see this adressed, but for the sake of newbies and such...

You find a lot of doublers and jack-of-all-trades on this board. What are ALL the instruments that you play, besides clarinet? It can be everything from Piano to Harmonica to the Jew's harp, and it can be just beginning to virtuoso!!

Here's my list:

French Horn (not TOO bad)
Trombone (not the best)
Euphonium (pretty good)
Tuba (my personal best)
Trumpet (I suck at it)

Flute (needs work)
Saxophones (ditto)

Recorder (pretty good)
Pennywhistles (good)
Guitar (I guess I'm good)
Mandolin (needs work)
Piano (it takes time)
Voice (people SAY I can sing)
Hurdygurdy (just starting)

And, of course...
Clarinet (needs work, of course!!)

Best--A/Bb/Eb/C sop clarinets (Professional Level)
Doubles--All Saxes, Flute, Bass Clarinet
Double Reeds--depends if I can find a good reed (my weakest ones)
Brass--Good Trumpet/Horn (college secondary instruments)
Other Brass--All, for instructional demonstration purposes
Strings--Violin best, but you would all pay me to stop playing!!!
Percussion--Good at the snare rudiments, tympani and mallets
Piano--can accompany solos and ensembles (by chord symbols/ear)
Voice--OK at singing swing, rock and roll and group sings.

Play classical, swing, jazz for whomever will pay me (or let me)

Bottom Line (as always)--Good Clarineting!!! Keep Music Live!!!

I figure I shall add my 2 cents here. Not quite as impressive as some, but I try.

Ok, as for the instruments I play well, that's just Euphonium and clarinet. But, for instruments that I have the ability to play on elementary/middle school level or so, I play: flute, alto sax, Tuba, and Trombone. I can then play little ditties on violin and guitar (I just got my violin about a month ago and have been slowly teaching myself to play), and I can play instrumental music on piano to tempo. IE, when I need to get intervals in my head, or figure out how it's SUPPOSED to sound with good intonation, I knows which keys correspond to which notes. That's about it. Not too great, but I only started Euphonium last November, and clarinet last March, and I'm decently competant on both of them, considering how long I've been playing. The rest I've started playing sometime since August of this year, and so I'm really not too great on them yet. I just basically pick up anything I can get my hands on, but my band director has run out of things to give me/patience to lend me more instruments, so I'm pretty well done for the time being. It's nice to see that there is at least one other Euphonium player who doubles (decca-quintiples, or some such thing?) on Clarinet. *grin*

My 2 cents worth:

Clarinet - best and favorite, I call it my comfort zone
Piano - about a year and a half
flute - just started around 8 months ago
handbells - played with a group for about 2 years, but recently quit to have more time to practice the first 3 on the list.

trombone - in high school, not recently but still have the old horn
bass clarinet - in high school, used a school horn. May get my own one of these days.

I play professionally: clarinets, oboe/English horn, bassoon/contrabassoon, and viola; and also do a lot of pit/sub work on flute, violin, cello, and saxophones in addition to the above. I have played the above instruments for 10-13 years, and practice an average of 4-5 hours per day, including group rehearsals and lessons. I also fancy myself a bit of a French horn player, but sadly, I'm no Phil Farkas...I play mainly because I enjoy the sound and feel of the instrument, but I don't devote any serious amount of time to it, cuz, well, it just wouldn't help :) (The only times I ever manage to get the entire way through the Strauss Horn Concerto, I always seem to wake up just as the applause starts :P )

It seems as though I have some sort of horn in my hands or mouth for most of my waking moments...and I don't think I can see my life any other way :) It's what I was born for, and it feels great :)

Happy Musicking, however you do it!!

Clarinet-- by far my *best* instrument (though still not fantastic by any means)
Piano-- I'm am just not able to produce some proficiency on the piano after 2 years of lessons I'm finally beyond fake songs in a method book and on to simple arrangements! Yay!
Trombone--I know where the positions are and can produce a sound and play simple hymns... I'm better with a trigger trombone than one without. :)
Trumpet-- I'm terrible but know how to finger the notes
Tuba-- can't make much sound on it, but again know the fingerings
Baritone-- I'm good at this (though still a beginner)
French Horn-- I'm the best at this out of all brass (still a beginner)
Percussion: I am decent at marimba and snare drum, not so great at bass drum or timpano and I hate the weight of the symbols...

I'll let you know about everything else after I've taken those tech classes. ;)
There is some advantage to being a Music Ed major... I get to play with other people's horns without feeling ashamed of how bad I am in college. :D

Clarinet of course
Piano since I was little (my mom's a piano teacher) but I am not that good at it because I just don't practice the piano :)
and that is it! hehe

I wish I could play more instruments though!

Anyway, I believe that quality is a lot more important than quantity.

Well, this weekend for a church "talent" show I am playing a Handy Tube-ah, a Columbian Bag Flute, a Clarinex, a Craftsman Variable Speed Drill, Staplernets, and a Hoover Vacophone.

Violin- fairly well, I can play Mozart concertos
Piano- not so well, Clementi sonatinas?
Mezzo soprano- I try. I'm waiting for my vibrato to sneak up on me but it hasn't shown up yet.
Oboe- sort of, it was an adventure. I made a lot of noise.
Viola- I can play the "big violin" just fine but I'm not very good at reading the clef (it's just like transposing on clarinet and I can't do that at fast tempos either). And a 17" or even 16 1/2" viola makes my intonation suffer greatly.

Voice, for more than 30 years now. It was how I stayed involved in music during the 18 years sabatical that I took from the clarinet. Thanks to church choir, I still perform much more often singing than on the clarinet.

I attempted the oboe in high school, but never became decent on it.

I am nowhere near virtuoso level on any instrument, but now that I think about it I have accumulated quite a few over the years.

Clarinet (fairly well)
Oboe (fairly well)
Flute (needs work)
Tenor Saxophone (okayish)
Trumpet (beginning)

Guitar (know enough chords to accompany, no soloing here)
Viola (enough to qualify me for clarinet in a school orchestra, no more)
Piano (fairly well)
Voice (very well, needs work)
Handbells (fairly well)
Recorder (fairly well))
Harmonica (okayish)

Random hittable things can also be added when needed!

For my 200th of a dollar,

I tried trumpet, harmonica, snare drums, and recorder all with mediocre to poor results. None kept my interest the way clarinet has, so I keep it as my one and only. I have been told I play well but I'm nowhere near ready for Carnegie Hall yet. Still practicing, practicing, practicing...LOL

My measly little list:

-saxophone. one year, but better than the saxophonists in our band
-clarinet. four years....and strugglin
-recorder. was the best in my fifth grade class, but that's not saying much.
-piano. uh... does heart and soul count?
-bassoon. three years, and I still can't play in tune. Is it REALLY possible??? I did get into district band though...
-baffoon
-babboon
-gaboon
-burping bedpost
-etc!

I play clarinet to earn my living and used to play saxophone quite a lot, but I got into traditional folk music as a hobby (lots goes on in pubs) so now I play
Bagpipes..... Northumbrian, Irish, Spanish, want to get Bulgarian
Whistles.... various sizes (it's amazing what you can pay for a "penny" whistle
Concertina....english
Bodhran
Bones...... give this a try, it's intriguingly simple but difficult
Appalachian dulcimer
I keep seeing different instruments in sessions and thinking "that sounds lovely, I wonder how it works"
I also play guitar, so I can make 'whole' music by myself and lute because I couldn't resist learning to read their notation and I love renaissance music, but it doesn't sound too good on the clarinet.

Aside from the clarinet, just the piano. I started both at the same time.
As an adult, I've had more opportunity to play the piano--at church, weddings, other events--and more opportunity to make money--but the clarinet is still more fun.

Clarinet - including a 7 year stint on Eb. I started playing guitar 4 years ago which was my first intro to the world of chords. While I'm always tempted to try picking up another instrument, it's hard enough finding time to practice 2 of them.

clarinet- really good, I'm skipping the next grade exam and going onto the one above it.

dijeridoo- found an unused piece of PVC plumbing after renovations to the house, and just kept workling on it until I figured out how to make the right noise, er, *sound*. Havent figured out all the tricks like major timbre changes and circular breathing though.

recorder- I suppose everyone can do this though. I'm average. Know the fingering through 2 octaves but can't play anything complex.

Oh yeah, and I can impersonate Louis Armstrong without getting a sore throat! :)

be bee ba bo...

Wow, you guys are all really talented!! (multi-talented especially!) My mom always tells me to like not be mediocre at a lot of things, but to be good at one thing. Sadly, I didn't listen to her. ;))

Clarinet: Yay, I love it! It's my bestest and favoritest instrument. Also the most fun to play..but that overlaps. I only play in school band and lessons.

Viola: I've been playing it as long as clarinet, but I don't like it as much. I guess I could arguably be better at it, but that is probably due to the lesser number of players! But, even though I hate it, I'm still in school orchestra, youth symphony, quartet, and lessons, for some reason.

Piano: I started out on it at the old age of 8 compared to all you prodigies out there. I can sightread ok, but it takes me a long time to prepare any piece. I just finished First Arabesque and Italian Concerto (Bach).

Drums: I'm learning snare drum right now, for marching band, so I don't have to play clarinet in it. I'm gonna play in the MB never year, and it rivals clarinet in fun factor. Plus it's much more convenient because you can just pick up some sticks at any time and jam away! Rudiments are ok, but I don't know that many yet.

Bye!

I have discovered a talent deep within for any woodwind...I love the clarinet of course (it's my major afterall), but I found it extremely easy to pick up flute and any of the saxophones. ( I play in flute choir and have for 1.5 years, and have just recently picked up tenor saxophone for jazz band on the college level). Bassoon was really fun too. Any methods class was usually a breeze for me. Percussion was good, brass was good. I find it all very fun. I play a little piano and am planning to take lessons this summer. If it is much of a hint, I'm planning to get a masters in Woodwind performance....anyone have any advice for that??

Happy Clarineting!
Heidi

Clarinet, of course.
Alto and baritone saxes...I played alto this summer in my camp jazz band, and picked up the bari after my favorite musical director asked me to play it in his pit orchestra for "leader of the pack"...i play bari in my school jazz band, too...alto is just for my own enjoyement, although i made my debut this weekend playing with my dad (he plays folk/blues guitar and harmonica) at a local coffehouse.
guitar...for seven and a half years!

Clarinet for just coming up to one year.
Recorder: once pretty competent (highlight of my "career" was performing Brandenburg Four with a semi-pro violin soloist), but I rarely practise now.
("French") horn when I was at school; that was a real challenge. Haven't played for a long long time now; I might go back to it one day when I've a lot of time to spare.

And I've been trying to teach myself the piano on and off for twenty years. I'm _terrible_ at it. Okay, I can play a few proper pieces (Bach, Schubert, Beethoven) but it just takes me so long to learn anything.

I'd say clarinet is currently my best instrument: it's certainly the one that's getting the dedicated work.

The other challenge is persuading my wife to play the piano. I have motivation but no talent, she's just the reverse.

Clarinet...Duh. (going on 23 years now...) I gots all the right names on my reesooome...(hehe)

Flute...(going on 22 years now...)...never took a lesson but I have one student!

jez....i also yearn for a Bulgarian gaida...can make a few notes on Bulgarian kaval but have problems with air...

Noone else here plays accordion? Or are you all still closet accordion-players? I'm definitely "out" as an accordion player!

Armenian duduk (not great...just a little)

Penny whistles (hubby thinks I suck, I think I'm ok...)

Piano....since 1974 but I realllllly do suck!

recorder if someone lends me one...

I played alto sax for 3 months on a cheap rental...not enough time to practice though...

Finnish kantele...my kantele is broken right now so I don't play so good... ;)

Prim (a Croatian plinky-type thingy) I had to play this for a show last year...I really stink!

Viola da gamba...a brief 6-month stint at the beginning of college-loved it!

Don't give me anything brass or stringed without frets! I need buttons to push...

The piano - I can transpose, sight-read, adding chords to melodies, accompany myself (with a tape recorder of course), move the congregation to tears, everything I wish I could do on the clarinet.

The flute - up to some of Bach's sonatas.

The marimba - 4 sticks, still need some work on the rolls, still saving up to buy a 4.6 octave rosewood marimba (takes forever).

The snare drum - half of the rudiments. Never quite like it.

Snooker - best break 9 points only, not bad for a 2 month beginner I guess. Out of practice now because I cannot bend forward.

To be good at one thing only? Every new thing I pick up is like a new friend - you don't have to break away from the old.
