The Horovitz Two Majorcan Pieces never appealed to me, as neither is particularly interesting.
#1 Paguera - The entire piece is built upon a 2 measure rhythmic motive. Not terribly inventive or appealing. Many scale passages based on G major and E melodic minor. Level of difficulty - early high school.
#2 Valdemosa - More interesting than #1, but barely. Piece is based on 2 chords: E major and C major. It soon becomes an E major scale exercise. After the first 2 lines, no surprises (for you or the audience). Level of difficulty - early high school.
I understand what Horovitz was trying to accomplish in these pieces, but the rhythmic figures, while being nothing more than an off beat accent, soon grow tiresome. These works might be used as a quick encore selection - that is about all.
There are many better choices on this level...GBK

in addition...At one time the NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) manual had this piece listed as a Grade 4. (That decision must have been made on a Friday afternoon at 4:45).
The error was finally discovered, and the piece was pulled from the manual.
I don't know how many students benefitted from this "gift" by the NYSSMA committee...GBK
