Yes.

They're both so completely different in their approaches to clarinet ...

May this is me, but i don't think it's appropriate to ask that question. Quite rude to be honest, you are asking to judge someone else's ability in an open chat room? What a surprise you don't even BOTHER to put up your email address. Personally it doesn't matter, both do a great job, bravo to their accomplishments and i am hope i succeed like they have.

It's perfectly appropriate to ask the question - we judge people all the time. You mean you've never discussed someone's ability in public?

However, whether or not an answer is appropriate is a different question altogether.

The question is valid.
My answer is reserved for myself and those I trust with my opinions.

Totally agree with MC and MA.

It would be interesting to learn about those differences rather than simply scoring them. So if anyone wants to say a little more on MC's point re contrasting qualities, I for one would be interested.

When I was young and naive (a few days ago, plus a few decades), I was involved w/a community play house. I was set design and construction chair. In passing, I commented on an actors (lack of) abilities on stage. In short order, I found that you don't do that.

It is permissable, however, to contrast two actor's abilities when making casting decisions in order to assemble a spirited, balanced cast.

Discuss differences... Leave 'who's better?' out of the discussion.

when i first read this a couple of days ago i started to write a reply but never posted it- my first thing to say was "what does "better" mean". now, after thinking over it all, and then comming back to the board to see what others wrote.... i think i'll actually stick my neck out.
Morales= plays much closer to my "ideal", + is adventurous without going overboard.
Neidich= a more interesting player in many respects, but not to my taste.
As teachers (i've played to both of them more than once in masterclasses)
Morales= pretty good
Neidich= would not recomend to a student that didn't already have a really good technique and grounding. i found that most of his technical advice was dodgy, and certainly did not benefit from it in any way (except in that it exercised my tactfulness). Perhaps the fact that he is such a good player works to his disadvantage here- has no one ever argued with him over some of the strange things he says? ("tighten your throat up more" "press your tounge harder against the reed" for example).
On the other hand, i would say that he was quite inspiring musically, and this is pretty important i'm sure we all agree! If you were a "star pupil" i could imagine him being an excellent guide into the music profession.
sorry to all the big Neidich fans out there, but i'm not too fond of his playing (i'm sure he doesn't care, and will go on being much more famous than me!)

I don't it's fair to judge two professional clarinetists who have their own styles. One is not better than the other, just different.

Kim L. - in a sense there is no question that you are correct here, but on the other hand there is a difference between "respecting differences" and "having an opinion". i thought my posting made it clear what my opinion was, and how insignificant my opinion was. But i'd actually like to hear what your opinion was, especially if it disagrees with mine. Surely you have one? I've never met you, but i will respect what you think to be true.
anyway- professional clarinet players are judged all the time by their peers, by the marketing executives, by the public etc etc etc. I don't think they worry too much about what i might think- however, if i was a professional clarinet player i'd actually prefer to know what people really think instead of being surrounded by sycophants. (that sounds a bit harsh, and i'm not actually acusing you of being sycophantic, but illustrating that this is a danger IMHO)
anyway, no one seems too interested in this topic anyway, it is pretty much a dead end kind of question UNLESS the person who brought it up is trying to chose between the two as teachers, which is why i responded- i thought maybe "what do you think" has to decide which college to accept etc (it's that time of year in the US, isn't it?).

I don't think it's a matter of being fair, it is just an opinion. I do believe they are two different types of players, very good indeed. But sometimes people like the way others play more and that particular artist could be more popular. It depends where your coming from.
