 Quintets

why is it that so many of the woodwind quintets out there are modern? No offense to any composers or anything, but I do not like most modern music. but, I went to the music store to get wuintets today and I found about two non-modern pieces. Why are there so many utterly wodern pieces out there and awailable and so few old quintets? What are some really good quintets for a "traditional" quintet?

There's hundreds at least of "classical" woodwind quintets! Check right here on Sneezy in the Composition section.

I too find the quintet repertoire generally disappointing. As MC says there is a huge amount of classical material, but most of it is second rate. The modern stuff is better but very little is great. The Barber summer music is superb. The Ligetti material is very good. The Holst quintet (at least the first two movements) is very interesting and may suite what you like. But for my money Janacek's Mladi is better than any of these, and he had the bright idea of adding a bass clarinet to the usual quintet forces. It makes all the difference to the musical scope of the ensemble.

WOW!!!!! Cindy there are so many great modern woodwind quintets!! I should know, I'm playing with a quintet that is going to the Fishoff Semi Finals. Here are some good pieces that you should consider. go check out ibert, taffanel, danzi, mozart, and yes there are some modern ones but they can be such fun! Like the hindemith, its a little more modern but it is such a fun piece to play. Good luck.

See if you can get your talons on a copy "Ensemble Repertoire" for WW5tet. It's by Himie Voxman and Richard Hervig. This is a book of 10 moderately challenging and contrasting pieces which vary in length, period and style.
Mozart, Bach, Lefebvre, Haydn, Koepke(who?) - its a cracker. You'll find many that can be built ideally into a recital if required. Best book of it's kind in my view and an essential starter for a "qwindtet"
It's a Rubank inc.(Chicago) Publication and not expensive for what you get - Full score book plus 6 books of the parts (including alt Bass Clar for Bassoon)

I have played out of the Rubank book and I thought that most of it was pretty easy.

What about the Gordon Jacob Quintet No. 1? It's really beautiful but some of it's fairly difficult (it's more or less romantic in style).
