Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew exactly how hard it is to get into the Pre-college at Juilliard. I'm in 8th grade and I think I play a bit above average for my age. I've been working on the Mozart Concerto(1st two movements) for almost a year now. Also, does anyone know of any clarinet groups I could play with or any orchestras I could join? (I live in Stuben County-Naples/Cohocton/Wayland area)

I guess we play the same thing Bea, I'm in 8th grade too, and I'm, too, looking for an orchestra that I can play in!!! amazing!

Well, aside from the fact that you made me feel a little older than I used to (I'm a 9th grader), I have heard that it is quite challenging. Also, you have to live in NY, or go and live there for the school year while you attend. I personally would love to attend, but my parents definitely would not be willing to fly me 3,00 miles accross country and pay a lot of money to attend a pre-college. There is quite a bit of info at their website, which I do not know offhand, but if you search for Julliard School of Music or Julliard Music college, on any search engine it shoud come up with their site.

My appologies to Sir/Madame Ab-your previous posting above stated that I should brag about myself, ohh I mean tell all you nice people who are reading this, about myself. The reason why I didn't in the first place was because I thought that some people would poke fun at my small record as a clarinetist, but if that's what you want, here goes nothing:
~I am 14 years old (8th grade)
~This is my 4th year playing clarinet
~I sit 1st chair in my band (which doesn't say much IMHO becahse my school is what you would call a sports centered school)
~I've made the all-county band each of the three years i was able to-1st time-1st chair, 2nd time-second to the last second, this year-3rd first
~Before this year I've only played leval 1,2, and 4 solos, but now I'm playing a 6 (Mozart Concerto) I can't say I've done exetremely well with it- got an 83 out of 100 in the Jan. solo festival-hoping for a better score in the festival this month
~I play Alto sax in a jazz band
~I practice clarinet every day possible
~As well as sax and clarinet I also play piano

Out-of-Town and Foreign Students
Since Pre-College students are not yet adults, those who live far away and must relocate to the New York City area must live with a family member or guardian. This parent/guardian must state in writing (on a form available from the Pre-College office) that he or she will be responsible for the student. Also, this person must give the name and address of the academic schoolthe student will be attending.
good luck, and remember that juilliard has a affiliated program with columbia college and barnard which are right near each other.

http://www.juilliard.edu is the Juilliard web site for the college--there is general information there for the Pre-College Division.
http://precollege.juilliard.edu is the web site for the Pre-College--there is contact information there. Call them and they will send you a catalog.
The application deadline for admission for next year has passed, but you can call them and ask. Auditions are in May. Admission is competitive, and, like all auditions, subjective and dependent upon the number of openings and the quality of the other applicants that year.
You do not have to live in New York or NYC. You do, howwever, have to be in NYC on Saturdays from September through May (the academic calendar runs for 15 weeks each semester for a total of 30). Classes generally start at 9:00 am and go until 6:00 pm or later, and your individual schedule could be anywhere in that period of time. Classes would include an orchestra rehearsal (2 1/2 hours), a private lesson on your instrument, music theory and solfege. Chamber music is available. Chorus is an option. Concerts begin at 8:00 pm, and there are sometimes Friday evening rehearsals before the concerts. Sometimes it is necessary to come in during the week. Many of the students come from NYC and NJ, but some come from elsewhere in NY State, CT, PA, VT, NH, MA, MD, Washington DC, etc., and yes, even CA. Be aware that it is one of the most competitiive youth environments in the world, and the string players there rival those found in college conservatories. On the other hand, it might be difficult to find better preparation for college auditions and a career in music, if that is your objective. The advantage in being there is that you will meet others whose interest and passion is similar to yours, and the high quality of the students and teachers and conductors cannot help but improve your playing.

Hello, a friend of mine who usually posts here a lot told me that there was a post about getting in to the pre collge. I am actualy in the pre-college and to be absolutly honest it not hard at all. In fact for me getting in was the easy part, the hard part is keeping up with the competition and all of the hard work that you have to put in, and belive it or not it really is not what piece or pieces you play but it's how you play it at the juilliard pre- college auditions. hey good luck if you audition and hope to see you there!

I'm at the MSM prep, and I know a lot of people who went to or are at the Julliard prep. Most of them (the ones that go to MSM now) say that Julliard is a lot more competative than MSM, and that they like MSM better. It has required theory and ear training classes, and a lot of electives. If you want to study jazz (like me!!!! i love my jazz combo class!!!) MSM is pretty good. You also don't have to live in NY to go to MSM, since it only has class on saturdays. Julliard is, of course, Julliard, which speaks for itself...
