 Deliveries from the United States

Is anyone abroad experiencing any difficulties getting deliveries of sheet music, books, accessories, instruments etc. from the United States? I understand that the US postal service has contracted a private company to handle overseas deliveries. In France, where I live, I'm told that deliveries no longer come directly to the house, with payment due for customs charges, if any, but that you first receive an invoice for duties AND delivery fees from the private company which you must pay before you can get your goods out of hock.

beejay: if you are having a problem have the music sent to a buddy and they can send it to you. That may work.

....the only problem i have ever had with stuff ordered from the US (and i've used a wide variety of shops etc) is this- US retailers can't be bothered going to the post office, so they use "quasi-courier" services that cost heaps more. For instance- IMS charge no less than $30 (us$) shipping on an order, even if it is just one mouthpiece- order three and it goes up to $45!!!!!!! this is a total rip off- Discount Reeds (in CA somewhere) take the bother of mailing it to me, it takes 3 or 4 days longer and only costs $5 for a package that weighs more than the IMS one. They are the only retailer other than Luyben Music that i have found will mail stuff cheaply for international orders.
....as far as paying customs duties goes- there will be different rules for each country, here in NZ you can bring in up to $600 NZ$ worth of stuff without having to pay extra.

I have had absolutely no problem dealing with US retailers and wholesalers. Barnes and Noble are a bit slow but sheet music plus is great. So is Woodwind and Brasswind, Forrest Music, Charles Double Reed.

Beejay

I haven't had problems with deliveries from the US - but that's because I can order what I want here in the UK. Presumably the carriage costs etc would be cheaper from here to France than from the US so if you haven't tried this route before you might find it worth a go.

I use John Myatt (www.myatt.co.uk) & Reeds Direct (www.reeds-direct.co.uk) - great service from both. Reeds Direct is a more limited stock (just reeds & a few accessories) but postage costs (UK & rest of EU) are included in the price. John Myatt charges extra for postage but has a much wider stock, including instruments (new & secondhand), cases and sheet music.

Apologies if this all old news to you.
