I am trying to buy a new barrel, and now considering Moennig and Chadash. what's their difference? which is better?

Your best bet is to contact International Musical Suppliers or Muncy Winds or one of the other clarinet specialty stores around and get some on trial. (There are also a number of others made by Clark Fobes, Jim Pyne, Walter Grabner, Chris Jepperson, etc.) Try a few of each, tape yourself. Evaluate based on tuning (using a tuner), tone, response, etc.
It is hard to give a definitive answer, as it would be to the question "What is better, an apple or a pear?". It depends on your taste, what you are looking for, as well as how it matches with your mouthpiece,reed, barrel, etc. One barrel may work well on your mouthpiece, but lousy on mine. Good Luck.

Buffet offers both Moennig bore and Chadash bore barrels as an option, and the larger stores stock them for $100 or a bit more. Both designs are a few thousandths of an inch smaller at the bottom of the bore than at the top. That feature tends to make the sound more focused.
Neither is "better" than the other. It's all a matter of what works for you and on your clarinet.
Buffet's barrels are machine-made, and so there's tremendous variation. You have to try a bunch to find what works best. Chadash himself finishes his barrels by hand and adjusts them to your instrument. I would recommend going to him.

Hi Sarah! You can try Muncy Winds, and speak to Phil Muncy. He is a pro clarinetist. I'm sure that you could try both barrels through Muncy Winds. He may also give you some insights. 1-800-333-6415. I played for YEARS on Moennig barrels on both my A and Bb. There was a distinct, but subtle difference in my tone and focus (with a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece). I now play with a Greg Smith mouthpiece and a Chadash barrel. I love my sound with this combination. Greg also sells the Chadash barrels, as well as mouthpieces. Do try several of each. I do recommend that you pick your mouthpiece first. If you haven't done that, try several mouthpieces and the barrels. Good luck! Sandra
