Question about Chedeville mouthpieces - repost
Author: Pat Parkin
Date:   2002-04-05 21:33

Hello All,

I have an assortment of older hard rubber Buffet and Evette & Schaeffer mouthpieces, all of
which have the much discussed "one line up, three lines down" that supposedly mark a
Chedeville blank mouthpiece. There are subtle differences, however.

On three of the mouthpieces, the lines are about 1/16" apart. Of these, two are marked Buffet
Crampon and one has no company mark. All three have "FRANCE" to the left of the table and a
"C" to the right, but on the blank mpc the "C" is in a slightly larger typeface.

Four of the mouthpieces are marked "Evette & Schaeffer", have lines between 5/64" and 6/64"
apart, "FRANCE" to the left of the table and "C" to the right, with the "C" in a typeface
slightly larger than the anonymous mouthpiece above, and substantially larger than the two
Buffet Crampon mpc.

The last mpc is a Buffet Crampon "C crown" with the lines 7/64" apart and all the other
attributes.

Are all of these mouthpieces from Chedeville blanks or just some of them?

Thanks

You probably won't get an answer that can be absolutely proven correct, but some, at least, think the mouthpieces you describe are all Chedeville blanks with those blanks having the 3 lines closer together being older Chedeville blanks and more desirable.

From my understanding from reading this board, however, I recall reading that Buffet altered the blanks with the Buffet logo on them. The E&S mp were left unaltered, however.

I also have a fine-playing mp with the "1 line up, 3 lines down" and with markings on its "back" [between the lines], a logo? much like that of the older Conns, NEMC, FRANCE, and near the tenon Steelite Ebonite. Beside the table is G 8 [a Woodwind Co facing, very similar to my older WW G8!]. As with Pat, I would be interested if it were a Ched., might make it play even better!! In the WW/BW catalog Bb mp chart, G8 is in column 43, right next to some of my other mps, VD 11.6, B45 and 5RVL, Sel C*, likely medium tip and 20+ mm lay. All comments appreciated re: mystery, Don
