 "Parto Parto"

There's a decent thread on this lovely Mozart aria with clarinet obbl. I note that it was probably written for Bb Basset Clar as opposed to A Basset Clar for Mozart Concerto and Quintet. Of course playing "Parto" on standard Bb Clar necessitates "surgery" to low arpeggios. Nobody has mentioned playing this on Bass to low C. I suspect because the octave lower will cover same ground as some of the piano LH and/or the voice and bass become "pitch separated".
Anyway I just wondered if anyone out there has tried "Parto" on bass and was it as bad as I suspect it might be ?

Bob -

The clarinet part intertwines with the soprano part. Playing it on bass would make you an octave lower and would spoil the effect. I'd say it's much better to play it on an unextended Bb clarinet than on bass.

And anyway, the sound of a Mozart-era clarinet is so much different from the modern one (much less brilliant, much softer) that the violence done by eliminating the lower notes is small by comparison.

Best regards.
