I'm writing a composition for my music class (I'm in high school), and would like to make it for clarinet trio. I'm not sure about the instrumentation, though - would it be 2 Bb's and a bass, or an Eb, a Bb, and a bass, or what?
Thanks for any input.

Hi, JC
Three thoughts about your composition dilemma.
1. As a composer you get to make that decision. Try to have some kind of aural concept about the way the different mixtures might sound, whether you want it sound homogeneous or if you want to stretch the range of the clarinet family.
2. Probably the "norm" of your choices might be, in order:
a. 3 Bb clarinets b. 2 Bb clarinets and a bass clarinet
c. Eb, Bb, and bass clarinet
3. Thought number three: see number 1. above!
Good luck with whatever you decide.

If there is, I want a copy of it. All of those instruments are hard to come by, much less write for. It WOULD make an interesting peice though, don't you think?
