What does the 'in blue' part mean in the title, if it has any significance? Blues scale? Or was Gershwin just being creative?

R & B was a serious attempt to bridge the "gap" between the classic and jazz idioms. The "Blue" in the title was probably a refference to the generous use of jazz chords (dominate 7ths) as well as the traditional "blue note" or the lowered major third--Eb in a C major seventh harmonic setting, for ex. Thusly, it is a "Rhapsody in Blue(blues style)" Blue does not reffer to the color of your face as you attempt to play the opening gliss. Good Clarineting!!!!!
