I just got a box of Vandoren 3s that were way too stiff for me. But I discovered by accident that they play just fine with my Rovner ligature placed upside down. Is this a common experience?

I think that is because the fit is tight at the bottem of the reed and loose at the top portion, which alows the reed to vibrate just a little easier maybe. Thats what the Rovner ligatures are made for, use them the way you need to. I like mine.......

I found that I ALWAYS get better response and tone with my Rovner (the "dark," or #1R, version) when putting it on "upside down," meaning with the "side" having the pins (through which the adjustment screw/bolt runs) on the reed. The directions that came with the ligature mention that this is one of the options for use, though probably more players using this ligature use the fabric-only "side" on the reed. On the other hand (following a fairly recent thread on the topic of using Velcro as a ligature), I've ceased using my Rovner in favor of a couple of narrow two-sided Velcro strips, because I like what results even better.

I "bought" an Eddie Daniels Rovner off e-Bay. The combinations with that and the tonal differences are amazing. The basic "upside two-rail" as per above, then, reversed, a metal two-rail hollow slide side that can be used by it'self, or with two different metal plates inserted. Additionally you can "flip" the fabric edges up over any of those bottom combinations. It's hard to not get what you want. When that happens go to the Peter Spriggs floating rail. Either/or don't get so snarled up in the "technology" that youy fail to enjoy the music--even made with shoelaces, or strips of rahide.

Does Beejay mean 'upside down' with the screw on the reed side, or 'upside down' the screw at the back but facing left?

I meant with the opening toward the bottom. I'm so happy with the result that I have reversed the direction of the screw so that the knurled knob remains on the right side of the mouthpiece.
