 player vs. horn
Author: bob gardner

we go round and round about who plays what and why. Or what did Benny play etc etc.
I believe it is more the person on the end of the horn vs. the horn itself. I for one would like to find the perfect clarinet; however it is not on ebay. (i checked)
I already own the perfect horn; how all i have to do is to improve so I can match the horn.

You're in good company, Bob :)
If we were all in as good shape as our instruments we'd be the greatest herd anyone ever heard :]

Bob there is a lot of merit in what you say. Based on my personal experience I know that I play and sound better on some horns than others. But I am not in BG's or Woody's league by a long shot. If BG sounded 10% poorer on a plastic Vito than on his main piece who would notice except him? I think, however, that I would sound maybe 25% poorer and not only I but others would also notice. I guess it's like taxes... $3,000 isn't much to a billionaire.

Bob, et all...
I personally think it's attitude....there are days when I really feel like playing...and generally can do whatever I want with my clarinet. Other days I play just to keep regimine and can't hit the notes...squeak....run out of air...and pack it up. I admire people like Artie Shaw...and Goodman...that played night after night. I know they had days (or nights) that they weren't "into it" and they probably felt they weren't playing well, but because they were so good, no one could tell but them and their bandmates.

I played from junior high through high school before trading my clarinet in for another cymbal for my drumset. (played rock and roll drums in San francisco professionally for 8 years) Anyway I didn't touch a clarinet again for 32 years. That was a year and a half ago. I can tell you that despite band/orchestra and private lessons, I now play better than I did then...because I WANT to.

It's attitude.....and I've got one!
John

John I agree with you 100%. The only reason i play and work at the clarinet is because I WANT TO. ISN'T THAT GREAT.

I believe there are many factors that must all come together in player vs. horn. Success comes the higher the skill level, knowledge, experience, instinct and education. The ability to control the instrument, (and performance setting) not the instrument contolling the musician. And there's a big difference between "wanting to" and "having to" as far as elective and/or compulsory playing. When hobby becomes profession, it becomes a business and that can and does change one's priorities and even desire in what can and must be played.

Ken: the problem with being a professional is that you have to something. The shame is that when many professional player retire they lay down the horn and never play again.
However we "wanting to" just do what we do for fun or because we love doing it. I'm glad to be a "wanting to"

I remember, as a student, going to hear the great player Yona Ettlinger playing with a string 4tet. I collared him afterwards and pestered him with all the usual questions about instruments, mouthpieces etc. but he refused to satisfy my curiosity, saying only that the way he wanted to play was in his head and given the time to get used to it, he would play that way on anything.
Wise words.

I recently visited a doctor. He was a young chap in his mid-30s, fresh out of residency and starting-up his new practice. I happen to have a Tom Clancy paperback tucked under my arm I was reading at the time, he noticed it and said, “wow, I can’t remember the last time I had the opportunity to read just for pleasure”.

I often look at things much too simplistic and in black and white. Makes sense to me, when a professional, playing musician retires they do exactly that, quit for good as with any other career field and I personally don't see anything shameful about it. It's truly a blessing to be able to play/study for pure pleasure and recreation, I can't remember the last time I did that myself. For me, it's one arranging project, gig, tour and recording session after another. However, when I retire that'll absolutely be IT for me. I relish that day and am completely at peace with it. v/r

Ken: i did the same thing. when i retired i never looked back to what i did for a living. however it was not something that i could do for pleasure or even do on my own.
If i was a professional musician I would think that i would continue to plan just for my own pleasure.
I believe the key word here is THINK.
