I found an old clarinet that looks to me like fine craftsmanship. The only marker on it is a small silver diamond-shaped marked - Wm.G. Schulz MAKER New York - This is stamped on three lines on the upper key section. This maker marker is about 3/4 in. wide and 1/2 in. tall. Other than that it looks like a clarinet. Very nice wood and keywork, One small crack at edge of bell, but not open and it has a silver ring around it. Any information as to age, the craftsman, quality, etc. Thanks for the time E-mail or start a thread.

If the look of the horn is good, would it be possible to critique how well it plays for us, too? Sometimes there is a "gem in the rough" out there...

It is presently not playable. The cork is completely gone. Pads look okay but will get done anyway. The reason I'm trying to find information about this instrument, is to determine where I will take it for refurbishment. Alocal shop, A big city shop, Or a shop specializing in restoration.

If it is a standard Boehm system key layout and all it needs is cork, pads, and perhaps a few springs, your local technician should be more than competent to handle the job. These are normal maintenance items and you do not need a restoration specialist.
If there are cracks in the wood or broken tenons, then you need a bit more skilled technician. However these are still fairly common types of repairs and the better technicians can handle them.
Now if keys are missing or a barrel or mouthpiece is missing and you can't find a modern one to fit, then you may need someone who specializes in restoration to make the missing part.
