 J. Stamitz and the clarinet
Author: clarinet713

Hi everyone

I am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. I am looking for some information on Johann Stamitz's use of the clarinet and how the Mannheim Orchestra helped to spread the use of the clarinet in orchestral music. If anyone knows of any websites or books or anything like that, that would be wonderful. I am trying to focus a paper on this, if there is enough material, though I have not found much. Thank you!

Check out Pamela Weston's book "Clarinet Virtuosi of the Past". I am not sure if it's still in print, but who knows?

clarinet713...If you can find a copy of Oskar Kroll's very informative clarinet history and development text "The Clarinet" (Taplinger Publishing), most information that you seek can be referenced there.

Read pages 46 - 98 ...GBK

In addition...besides the obvious focusing on the Stamitz family, you might also look at the following Mannheim composers:

Franz Tausch
Georg Friedrich Fuchs
Peter von Winter
Franz Danzi
Johann Wanhal (Jan Vanhal)
Christian Cannabich
Ignaz Holzbauer
Franz Ignaz Beck ...GBK

And...
Franz Anton Dimmler
Georg Friedrich Fuchs
Matthaus Blasius
Johann Sebastian Demar
Joseph Fiala
If you can get hold of it, there is an excellent five-record set of CDs dedicated to the Mannheim school of clarinet playing by the Kurfaelzisches chamber orchestra. It has excellent program notes. The refernce is Arte Nova classics, 74321 37327 2

Also

If you're interested in purchasing scores and or parts of some Stamitz clarinet concertos - the company I posted about above is New Zeland based and have an impressive catalogue. I'll certainly purchase music from them - supporting antipodeans is to be commended.
