 McCaw's Neilsen
Author: ken

I'm after a CD of the Nielsen Concerto with John McCaw as soloist.

The original recording was made with the Philharmonia Orchestra and released on vinyl in the early 70s. It has been mentioned in the archives as being on the Unicorn label, UNS 239 (CD release??), but there's no mention of it in the current catalogues.

Hope someone can help,

thanks,

Ken

GBK - as always, you're a bottomless pit of information.

i have an original vinyl recording of this- great playing.... though at times the orchestra plays pretty poorly- esp the flutes in the Mozart concerto on the other side.... but really worth hunting down and having in your collection. There is an interview with Mr McCaw in the Clarinet back issues where he discusses these recordings- how many takes and all that (i think one mvt of the mozart was done on a different day or something). i really wish JM had made more recordings of the solo rep, he's a great player!

And apparently made a clarinet from scratch! (Though I don't think he used it regularly in performance.)

Also, see the review of the CD in the latest issue of The Clarinet magazine.

I have a recording of Nielsen's 5th Symphony with the Philharmonia (under Jascha Horenstein) with McCaw playing the wild clarinet solo --- he does a great job with it --- that classic "British" sound (pardon my stereotyping!) with just enough slow vibrato to give it a bit of jazzy feeling, and a wonderful bell-like tone quality. I too would like to hear more of his playing.

That Nielsen 5th was the best ever done..and man McCaw really went for the throat here...somehow drucker and Berstein seem too civilized here and yet its also a good record...trey the newer Pavlo Berglund Cycle of Nielsen on Rca which is really fine too...
