Hello. Every year around all-state I always get nervous, especially when I am there and am about to try out for my chair at all state. This year I made the white band at all state. It goes RED(best), WHITE(middle), BLUE(bottom). Last year I made 1st chair blue band. I had 3 solo's, and actually made it through them! but do you guys do anything to help relieve the butterflies, or special tricks to help you during auditions. any help is deeply appreciated!

I went through the same thing in High School. I'd be literally shaking as I stood outside the audition room, waiting for my turn.
What eventually worked for me was focusing my thoughts on the music. You know, running it through your head, mentally rehersing the parts you know are tricky as well as those parts that may not be. Don't think about how important it is or how nervous you are.
I know, easy to say. But really, if you can just focus on what you are about to do, most of the nerves fade.

hi stephen:
when you are nervous or experiencing "butterflies" the adrenalin is flowing at a fast rate. you are at your best when this happens.

Butterfilies are GOOD... they keep you ALERT =|
Now, on the serious side of things :|
It looks like you're doing all things right, from the 'progress report' part of your post. Hang in there. Danette and Leo are right (voices of experience) -- take care of business and it'll be over... all too soon.

Someone once told me if you just start focusing
on the notes and where and what you fingers are supposed
to be doing it helps.

Some past suggestions given to me:
eat turkey and a banana.
breathe.
and what i did in that situation, when i went to all-state was i brought a walkman (tape or cd player) and listened to something that had nothing to do with the audition. i also brought a good book to take my mind off of the suspense. it's important to not overpractice that day, and seeing everyone freak out...hearing them all play the same thing over and over was horrible - the walkman/book helped. i warmed up about 10-15 minutes before i had to go, and did great. as long as you're prepared ahead of time, you just have to be confident that you're going to do your best. don't worry about anyone else.
hope this helps,
shari
