 Bb Clarinet + Swab = A Clarinet?
Author: kny
Date:   2002-03-20 05:58

I've been jobless lately and had nothing to do. Anyway this is what I did
1) Assemble the Bb clarinet without the barrel
2) Place the weight of the swab (preferably Buffet Swab) into the clarinet going in from the bell till the weight is exposed at the upper joint. The swab should be dangling outside the bell.
3) Assemble the barrel in such a way that the the cloth of the weight is held on by the barrel and the upper joint.

The resulting 'A' Clarinet is a bit stuffy but is quite in tune.

Have fun!

You have got a swab stuck up it! Of course it will play flat. Dont start stuffing around with your horn. Just buy a cheap A!

hehe... , the swab is outside the bell. Of course I wouldn't recommend doing that to a regular Bb instrument. I tried that on a cheap and old Bb

It's not working. Oh well, I don't need an A clarinet for a while yet.

Thats so cool - I tried it in orchestra yesterday - and - Perfectly in tune A clarinet. :-) (well almost) wonder if it would make any diff in tone quality if you stuck a plastic chord up it or something that doesn't dampen it so much. Certainly would be a cheap alternative.

Ok. I have heard of that before. Leave the inside of your clarinet alone!! People have so many problems later with the bore because of doing stuff like that. It's not smart to do. Just buy an A clarinet or transpose!

could it be playing flat simply because the bell is not on fully due to having a rather thick cord stuck in the joint?

just thinking laterally.

If you use heavier string in your E-flat, can you bring it down to B-flat?

ha!
