Okay - go ahead and say it...I'm cheap! I would love to know if anyone is aware of ANY way to rent or lease one of these expensive jewels. I want to do the Mozart on basset (sp) next Fall and I really don't want to buy an $6000 horn that I may use once or twice a year. Any thoughts on this????

I know there are a few colleges out there that have bassets. Perhaps you could rent one from them. I believe St. Olaf in Northfield, MN has them. However, I don't know what their policy is. Are you talking basset clarinet or basset horn?

It's not necessary to buy the whole instrument. A less expensive alternative is to have a bottom joint made to go on your existing top half or have a bottom joint converted to the extension. I think the first choice is better as you'd be stuck with the other whether you liked it or not.
Stephen Fox (sponsors) offers both these alternatives.

If I remember right St. Olaf (I'm in Minneapolis and know several people who studied there) has basset horns not basset clarinets. I could be wrong and it's worth a phone call 507-646-3180.

Look in the catalogs for a quick run-down to separate the Basset clarinet in key of A [extended range to its low C] from the Basset Horn in key of F [an alto cl with extended range to low C]. I've often thot that our low C bass clarinets should also be called Bassets [might compound the confusion!!]. The basset cl is needed [required?] for the Mozart Concerto, have heard Shifrin's rendition of it [GREAT], he also played the Quintet, but on a "regular" A. A good friend invested in one, a LeBlanc [I recall] and played it along-side of me [on bass cl], and transposed some of my "tender" parts in "Camelot" to it , very well !! Expensive fun ! Don

I guess I will never be able to stand to hear either of the Mozart pieces on A soprano clarinet. I just love the basset clarinet and it is pretty obvious that Mozart had that in mind (Stadler's horn). Oh well, here's to winning the publisher's clearing house sweepstakes someday!

jez - when playing in the BBC Phil, did the orchestra (or the BBC) own a set of "basset clarinets (and other big horns)" for such occasions, or, rather were they expected to be part of your weaponry - I guess I'm thinking about Messiaen's use of the contrabass clarinet in Illuminations of the Beyond, for example.
