Author: Kate Simon

HI! I am putting together program notes for my recital, which is going to include The Paul Harvey piece "Three Etudes on Themes of Gerswhin". I was wondering if anyone had any information on the work or the composer; I'm having a little bit of difficulty finding much. Thanks!!

Paul Harvey is a British player who was the professor of clarinet at the military school of music at Kneller Hall and was leader of the London Saxophone Quartet. I can't help with the piece I'm afraid.

I played the piece for my jr. recital, and here's what I had:

Paul Harvey, Born June 14, Sheffield England

"Harvey is a clarinetist, saxohphonist, and composer. He was educated at the Royal College of Music, and has been a member of the Scottish National Orchestra, the London Saxophone Quartet, and is currently Professor of Clarinet at the Royal Military School of Music. A book which stands out among the numerous teaching materials he wrote for clarinet and saxophone is Harvey's 'Clarinetist's Bedside Book.' He also composed a clarinet concerto and sonata, four saxophone concerti, several ensembles, and the 'Three Etudes on Themes of Gershwin' for unaccompanied clarinet.

Each movement of Harvey's 'Three Etudes on Themes of Gershwin' is based on a Gershwin tune, and has a Gershwin song title. Harvey has also dedicated each movement to one of his clarinetist friends. The first movement, 'I Got Rhythm,' is dedicated to James Gillespie. 'Summertime' is the name of the second movement, and is dedicated to Jerome Bunke (pronounced Bunky). The third and final movement is named, 'It Ain't Necessarily So,' and is dedicated to Anton Weinberg, who Harvey says thought of the idea."
