did anyone else watch jeopardy last night? ok ok, i shoulda bin practing - but anyway, one of the questions was this -
what part of a wind instrument is called the embouchure?
the answer was, the mouthpiece.
i always thot a mouthpiece was a mouthpiece and your mouth and lips around the mouthpiece formed the embouchure - not the actual mouthpiece itself.
what do you guys think?

According to www.m-w.com (Merriam-Webster dictionary online), there are two definitions for embouchure:
1 : the position and use of the lips, tongue, and teeth in playing a wind instrument
2 : the mouthpiece of a musical instrument

I've done a little more digging. Looking at an online French-English dictionary, the French word for "mouth" is "bouche" or "embouchure." The French word for "mouthpiece" is "cornet" or "embouchoir." Perhaps it is confusion with this last word that has led to acceptance by some, including dictionary writers, of the word "embouchure" for "mouthpiece."

According to my Petit Larousse Dictionnaire Encyclopedique, 'une embouchure' has dual meaning: the way to emboucher a wind instrument (to put in one's mouth), and the part of a wind instrument that one plays. An accompanying illustration shows flute, trumpet, oboe, clarinet, and organ mouthpieces.
