Today I was practicing with a fellow clarinetist, and when I tried to play my f in the throat register, it came out almost an e. The tone kind of "warbled" also. The thing is that as I warmed up, the pitch got better, but the tone only improved slightly. Is this just a matter of warming up, or could this be a problem with the instrument. I have been playing for 10 years and have never experienced anything quite this drastic. Thanks!

Ten years and still going strong Very doubtful it's you, Melanie.
A 'long distance' guess, from your description - would be a problem with the instrument :(
Obvious things to check:
Loose or worn pad (check the one next to the second open hole first), weak or 'unhooked' ring (brille) key spring, hinge maybe needs oil.
If you're still not sure after peering and poking, it could be a number of other things that a tech should be able to spot right away.

I know that some of my pads are bad (I'm getting an overhaul this summer) but I was hoping it was something I could fix now. When the problem first started, I immediately checked for water in a tone whole. I wish this was the problem, as it is easy to fix. Thanks for the help. I guess I just have to have my instrument looked at by my repairman. :-(

I have a student who had a similiar problem recently with the E below throat F and it was quickly fixed by putting an out of place spring back where it belonged.

My clarinet is an Buffet R-13. It's about 3 years old, and I've never had problems before. I love the instrument, so I'm really looking forward to getting it fixed. I think I'm getting an overhaul this summer anyways.
