 Tuning at mouthpiece
Author: Sneakers

I always thought you weren't supposed to tune by pulling out the mouthpiece(I have never known why though). One of my students asked me about it and I told her not to, but since then I have read a few previous posts where some of you recommend it. What is the general concensus?

I don't think I would do it. What notes would be most affected anyway? Probably the same notes (short tube notes) that are most affected by pulling the barrel. I would recommend pulling the barrel first, middle joint second and if your long tube notes are sharp pull the bell a little. If you need more that that you probably have a few more serious problems with your instrument or mouthpiece. Possibly a little longer barrel would take care of it.

I was told by Tom Ridenour, that it does not make any difference, accoustically, wheither you pull the mouthpiece or the barrel. Both adjustments will tune the whole instrument in the same manner. Stability may be a concern if your mpc cork does not securely seal and hold its place, but then the same could be true for the cork on the top joint tendon. Either way, the tuning effect is the same and the quality of the sound is not altered. Good Clarineting!!!!!

I have heard that when pulling the barrel joint, the resulting space leaves room for turbulence that could result in irregular intonation and pitch for some notes.

I tried tuning washers in the barrel and it seems to help avoid this type of problem. I do not believe they are available for the mouthpiece/barrel joint.
