what's the difference between philharmonic and symphonic orchestras???

usually the philharmonic is the "lower" orch. and the symphonic is the "more advanced" orch.

OK -- everyone who is taking pot shots at my daughter--- please stop. Mindy was and is referring to youth orchestras where USUALLY the phil is the "lower" orch and the Phil is the "upper" orch. Gee whiz -- give her a break. The original poster did not give any specifics as to anything except wantign to know the difference. Mindy was giving info based on what she knows about youth orchs and probably didn't even think about the titles of major orchs around. Cut some of these kids a break and remember what it was like when youwere younger and "thought you could answer a question".

Any difference in youth orchestras would be by local convention only and could be completely different somewhere else.

In college, the Philharmonic Orchestra was 1st, and the Symphony Orchestra was 2nd. It is probably just matter of whatever sounds the best to the person(s) naming the orchestra.

at CCM the Philharmonia is the top orchestra...
nice that Mindys mother stuck up for her! (and that she obviously knows where her daughter is "hanging out" on the internet)
they were being a little mean, but it's a tough world out there
if Mindy wants to write on an international notice board
she should maybe be a little more.... cautious.
meanwhile
Mr Charette has put this to sleep anyway....

Mindys Mom,
I have to agree with Donald N. about how it is good that you know where you daughter is hanging out......but also you realize that this is a International board. There are NO faces, ages, gender, etc.......with any of these names. We are not able to cut some slack for some one becuase of how they answer. Give "us" a break.
I knew Mindy was a younger person because of her and YOUR post about her teaching a while back. I have to say that This is one of the best posting sites out there. It is usually clean enough for kids......(until the "imposter" shows up...)
Just be ready to have a response to what you say........(good, bad, enouraging, or just goofy.......)

Mindy's mom...Kudos for the support you have given your daughter, and her obvious love for music.
However, no apology from me on this one.
As was stated previously, this is an international board which transcends all age groups and abilities. If you make a remark which you believe is fact - fine.
However, if it is incorrect, it will be challenged by others.(perhaps even with some good natured sarcasm) You must be ready to clarify or debate your position.
Don't think that this board should be "for scholars only". Young, inquiring minds do all of us a world of good, (and they certainly should be encouraged) but spurious "facts" will often be questioned. Life works that way...GBK

Thanks to all of you for your "apologies" --
Mindy and I have talked ENDLESSLY about how to be VERY careful in her posts here and other places. We have talked about being VERY clear in her choice of words but sometimes things go awry -- sometimes mothers come to the aid of the child when they need to allow them to "flounder" and learn from experiences. I, for one, should NOT have "expected" eveyone to KNOW tha tMindy was younger and my motherly instints jumped in to her defense. We are all very happy here and have talked about the postings and Mindy is not upset and neither am I -- I am sure that Mindy will be careful to be clear in her postings from now on -- if not -- please let her know (uuuuhhhh -- nicely???? please ???  lol
Anyways -- diz, thank you for asking abotu Mindy's clarinet playing -- she is doing well. Since she started "government" school this year (after being homeschooled for 9 years) she has found that she doesn't have time to practice as much. She is really bummed out about that but we are dealing with it. She was the top ranked 9th grader in the state this year (Florida) and that is quite an accomplishment here. She is also the highest ranked 9th grader in the county -- a VERY competitive county in the state. Her teacher is VERY pleased with her playing and says that Mindy plays better than several of her college students. At solo/ensemble competitions this year (as other years), the judges are blown away with her playing -- this year one asked her what she was going to be doing next year with her music since she going to college --- Mindy had ot reply that she was only in 9th grade and the judge about fell out of his chair -- he asked if we feed her musical wheaties for breakfast. He was extremely surprised that someone in the 9th grade played as well as she does.
