I have the same problems. Protect yourself when out in the sun. i.e. skiing, etc. Use lip balm early--at the first sign of a problem.

I don't think fever blisters and ANYTHING get along. :)

It's just like that old commercial........."Diaherrea is NO fun and a rainy day like this!..." :)

Lysine is good for fever blisters. You can get that at any store that sells vitamines.

I have had good results (and relief) by applying vitamine E directly onto the sore at night and frequently during the day. You can obtain vitamine E at your local drug shoppe in the forms of suppliment capsuls (which you can prick with a pin to get the liquid inside) or as a clear liquid in a small bottle. It's a thick and sticky substance like a motor oil additive and seems to accelerate healing while providing some degree of comfort as a moistening agent. My cold sores are usually off to the side of my mouth allowing me to continue playing without too much difficulty with use of this vitamine. But I think that even if my sores were in contact with the reed, with liberal applications of vitamine E liquid as a moistener--and ignoring the pain--necessry playing (gigs, auditons, etc) would be possible. As for practice, I would just take some time off, gob the vit. E on my sores and read a good book (on clarineting, of course). Good Clarineting!!!!!!!!

Carmex is sold in small squeeze tubes now which seem to work quite well plus it's good for just general lip therapy.

Welcome to the club! The only thing which helps for me is ZOVIRAX LIP.
Apply it as soon as you feel anything "strange" (itching or so) on your lips.

the best thing currently available OTC is Abreva. it's expensive (like $15 for a 2inch tube) but it helps heal so fast! Once my cold sore (which i had for 2 days already) healed completely in about 6 hours.

I have used Lysine and it does work. It can be taken orally as a preventative as well. It is available in a topical lip balm called Lycall.

Carmex does not do much to heal cold sores and may irritate them more (in some people).

Vitamin E, applied topically can also cause irritation in some people. Be careful with it.

Zovirax is a topical ointment containing the anti-viral drug acyclovir, used to treat herpes. It is only available in the US by prescription (I believe).

I have not tried Abreva, but I have heard good things about it.

Don't kiss anyone.

For cold sores, gargle with a 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water -- the same stuff you've been cleaning your reeds with. Just make sure you don't swallow the stuff.

I believe this goes along the lines with cancor sores. Ouch! But, I took some time off although I would rather not. However, it helped me return to my playing quicker than normal if I hadn't taken my vitamens and if I hadn't taken the time off. Warm salt water often works because salt water is a natural healer without doing much to harm you although the taste may not satisfy, it never hurts to look over your music when you can't practice and studying it so that you may return as soon as the sore allows.

Just to clarify what I'm sure Don meant . . .

Normal drugstore variety hydrogen peroxide is already diluted to 3%. Cut that 50/50 with water and you have the solution Don mentioned. I only bring up the clarification because higher concentrations than 3% are available for hair treatment and other commercial purposes, and a real 50% solution of hydrogen peroxide could be deadly.

This reminds me of the cowboy who petted his horse in strange places and then rubbed it on his lips. When i asked him what he was doing he said he had cold sores. I said did it help. and he said it stopped him from licking them.
what ever works.

I apply a small amount of Methelated Spirits with the finger as soon as I feel one coming --- and they don't --- been doing this for years and my lips have not dropped off yet.

Methylated spirits, by definition, is the result of rendering ethyl alcohol unfit to drink with methyl alcohol (a potent poison that can cause blindness and death).

You are risking more than the discomfort of a sore.

Thanks for all the advice. I am now using a combination of Denavir (a prescription cream), Abreva, and Carmex. It is not red, though very sore and incredibly itchy, but I am NOT TOUCHING IT! I have been taking a break from playing which is sad, but this giving me a lot of time to work on my music history paper-the Baroque Clarinet. I've never cleaned my reeds with Hydrogen Peroxide-is that something I should do? Thanks again!!
