I went out on a limb last night and ordered 2 1U rack mount servers with plenty of disk and memory and a reasonable CPU (for you tech weenies - after looking at power requirements, I/O, speed, etc. they ended up being 900 Mhz Duron, 1Gb PC133 ECC memory, ATA/100, a 20Gb and a 40Gb disk per unit - 7200RPM, and 2 10/100 NIC interfaces - one for Internet connection, one for a fast interconnect between the 2). They're being custom built & burned in now, then they'll get shipped from California to Texas where I'll load & stress them for a few weeks, then I'll get them to Michigan where they'll take over for the old pair. I already have an ethernet power switch and other odd bits and pieces that lets me totally control the systems and troubleshoot from pretty darned near anywhere in the world.
I've received enough money to pay for 1 1/2 servers so far, but checks are starting to come in so I estimate that both are covered. There's just the Internet connection left.

Dear Mark et al,
I sincerely hope that the clarinet crowd comes through for you - for us all - with the pledges. I was watching Public TV last night and though of the comparisons and the reasons to support Sneezy.
Other than the content - which is a whole (elementary, graduate and post graduate) course in the clarinet (from the history, to evaluations of the newest instruments and assessories) - this site gives us all good advice on music making (both beginner, novice and some pretty top ranked players).
If these esoteric reasons are not good enough then it has saved me a bunch of money with good reccommendations on resources for horns, ligatures, mouthpieces and reeds. There is also some fun, drama, and good humor sprinkled throughout.
As Mark points out - there is no such thing as a free lunch and the technology engine driving this site requires money and time. Personally, I feel that this is a pretty darned good use of my pledge contribution money. As Mark points out, the pledges need not be large, just numerous.

I would love to see small & numerous donations! At this point I see 69 people who have helped out this time. Considering how many different people visit the site it seems to me to be a small number of "helpers".
You don't have to have your name posted on the Pledge Board if you don't want to. Just let me know and I'll mark it as "Anonymous".
