 Leblanc Opus pads
Author: Aures

I saw a used leblanc opus clarinet with cork pads on the top joint and some strange looking pads with metal discs on the bottom four keys of the lower joint at the Woodwind and Brasswind in NYC. I've never seen these type of pads on the lower joint before and it is pretty interesting. It's sort of like saxophone pads but smaller. If anybody know more about these pads and what their benefits are please tell me cause I might want try them on my clarinet.

My Opus had the same pads on the lower joint when I bought it. Those metal things you see are called resonators, they are sopposed to make playing in the lower register easier and better the overall acoustics. They were removed though when brannen woodwinds over hauled my clarinet. I didn't notice they were gone for several weeks.

They are just reflectors. The difference they make is fully debatable as sax players will tell you. The benefits of cork pads on clarinets is also subjective. I have never tried using refectors on a clarinet but have found them to improve some bassoons on the long joint after some undercutting.
