 reed samples

Does anyone know of any reed manufacturers who supply samples of thier product? I'm not talking a truckload, just a couple from one or two strengths. I'm currently using Mitchell Lurie Premiums, but would like to try Zonda, Olivieri, Glotin, Alexander Superial, Marca (particularly the Pete Fountain) and any other brands that might end up being "the reed of choice". If you know of any reed makers who do supply samples, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks
John

Samples are traditionally provided at trade shows, but by the time you figure postage et al., sending individuals reeds isn't cost effective (along with maintaining a database of who you've already sent reeds to - there's people out there who'd take advantage of the system!)

If I were you I'd write personally and request a couple from the manufacturers, but don't get your hopes up.

Here, in France, Vandoren at last sell their reeds in packs of two.

If you find a store who stocks these reeds, (good luck) they will usually sell a few out of the box.

Besides that, you can't really tell what the brand is typically like just by trying one or two reeds.

Why don't you look at the reed and mouthpiece specs to see what you need? Some of these reeds may be incompatible with your mouthpiece. You could try splitting some orders with other clarinet players. Try calling Muncy Winds or Woodwind Brasswind for information.

John -

When Zonda reeds were introduced several years ago, they sent a 4-pack to everybody on the Clarinet magazine subscriber list. Perhaps they'd send you one if you contacted them. Otherwise, find a trade show (doesn't have to be clarinet -- a bandmasters' show will have freebies).

If you're a bandmaster or a professional teacher, the reed makers are likely to send you samples. You need to look to them as if you're in a position to buy or influence people to buy numerous reeds. They're not in the business of sending free samples to people just to try out. The ones they give out at the shows are intended to get you to buy whole boxes.

Isn't it possible to go to a music store and pick a couple of reeds out of a box? It's not THAT expensive.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw

Someone in Phil Muncy's shop was kind enough to send me a few reeds from their newly acquired line (I think they're Olivieri..Please correct me if I'm mistaken.)

Try setting up a business such as a repair lab or retail shop. Then you might get a few samples. I love the three pack Grand Concerts that are regularly sent here to Australia. I seem to find about 10 packs a year with 1 #2, 1 #2 1/2 and 1 #3 in either evolution or thick blank. Saves heaps of money! The funny thing is though I tend to use Vandoren or Lavoz by choice and nobody ever gives me any of those for free. Hang on the Vandore rep gave me a packet of white masters last time I saw him.
