Since we have so many Antipodean friends and colleagues on this forum, I wonder if any of them have tried Vegemite as cork grease, or found any other practical use for this substance.

As an aussie I'm fully qualified to answer this
Vegemite - national culinary icon, similar to promite or marmite (but only in appearance - not taste).
As to using it as cork grease - are you a complete dill? I mean, would you use peanut butter or any other vegetable based substance - I think not.
Vegemite - is best used sparingly on toast, with butter (not margarine) - we eat it for breakfast, etc.
I, personally, love it spread thickly - most don't.

Oh, good on ya, Bob! - vegemite is certainly an aquired taste, bit like getting used to americans, really - but if you perservere you'll eventually find them charming, if not quite delicious!

I'm Canadian but I'm married to an Aussie. I can hardly get close to an opened jar of Vegemite. I think you have to be weaned onto it! When visiting a friend in Ottawa I gave him some and he figured it would make good axle grease. Never thought of trying it on my corks......

Marmite tastes different? I know you're just trying to bait me! But Marmite does have a slightly stickier texture and sticks to the knife more. Marmite has the advantage, of course, of NZ manufacture. :-) It has more flavour.
That advertisement must have been on the radio at least 4 decades ago!

I beleive it falls into the category of "breakfast of champions" amongst other things such as meat pies or prawns. Diz is 100% when he says it must be eaten with butter not margarine! Marmite is made out of sheep shite!

I specifically referred to Marmite, the very jar of marmite that is in my hand, the label of which says "Made in New Zealand" by the "Sanitarium Health Food Company, 124 Pah Rd......", which is about 1 km from where I live. I pass it daily.
I concede now that it is also made in Australia, having researched:
