Hi,

Is there any way for us clarinets in school to learn to play jazz in an ensemble? The stage bands are all focused on sax/trumpet/trombone/drum set/piano, so it's kinda hard to ask to join when I can't really play any of the other instruments. Of course, they don't only play jazz music--I think they do rock, latin, and others, but isn't it fair to include the instrument which was legitimately one of the first jazz solo instuments?

I just saw the Louie Armstrong biography and mostly the clarinet guy he was playing with, so that's for the interest in it ;)

Ask your band director for help in forming a combo--typically trumpet, clarinet, trombone, keyboard, bass and set. Another solution which would be very good for you in the long run, learn to play a saxophone and join the jazz ensemble. Hope these ideas generate some opportunity for you--Good Clarineting!!!!!!!

Almost every teenage clarinetist with an interest in jazz (including myself years ago) has gone through this frustration. You can learn to play jazz no matter what your instrument, but the fact that big bands and pop groups don't have clarinet-only positions is going to be there your entire life. Learn to play the saxophone. It's not hard to do, is a great ticket into the mainstream, and will enhance your utility as a clarinetist.

You can ask wour director to play swing music like "Moonlight Serenade," by Glen Miller or "Let's Dance," by Benny Goodman and Fanny Baldridge. These are a couple of many exellent examples that include the usual sax/trumpet/trombone/bass/set AND have really cool clarinet solos! SWING IS THE BEST!!!!

You said it, Nic! I'm still trying to convince the bandteacher that we need a clarinettist. In fact, we have one! (On one song only, but it's a start!) She plays a clarinet solo on Watermelon Man! One song is more than there has ever been before, and next year I am attempting to get my talented friend at the position of jazz band clarinetist--The first ever permanent one! I may play sax in band, but my heart will always remain with my first even woodwind.
