I understand the marcato notes are staccato created by stopping the air column... Is this true in general? A stylistic choice? or true of the classical period only? Can marcato be played without stopping the airstream?

Sorry, that should a sort of longish staccato created by stopping the airstream.

Also, would marcato be a sort of staccato and accent all in one.
