Has anyone heard of a La Clavel clarinet?
Author: sandy

Hi,

I've been trying to figure out who made the clarinet I own. It is metal and on the bell it says:

La Clavel
Made in U.S.A.

Below where the mouthpiece attaches it is stamped AC1027

I did a search on this Bulletin Board and also Google but didn't find anything so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks in advance for any information or pointers on where to look this up.

Sandy

Thanks for looking for it in the Langwill Index...

Since the time I posted yesterday I've learned a lot from reading the various posts on this BB so thanks to everyone who shares their knowledge here. Based on what I read I have been able, in my mind, to determine that this is probably not a very good clarinet:

1) most metal clarinets were made for beginning students and weren't that well made

2) there were a few metal clarinets made for pro/intermediate and looking at a list from this BB, La Clavel is not on the list

3) the clarinet is nickel, not silver - thanks to the post about how to determine this

4) it is not in the New Langwill Index which again makes me think it must not be very good or it would have made mention

What I am planning on doing with the clarinet is to make a lamp for my sister. Her birthday is in a few weeks. She has played the clarinet since we were young and has a passion for it. She saw a lamp made from a clarinet one time and really liked it.

So, I guess I am just looking for an opinion from those more experienced that me that I won't be harming a good clarinet or taking it out of circulation by making a lamp from it. My other option would be to give it to new student, but from some of the descriptions of the quality of this type of clarinet I'm not sure if I'd be helping or hurting :-P

Any feedback welcom before I take the next step.

Sandy
