Mouthpieces made from Babbitt blanks are marked with a number, a single digit over a three figure number. It's on the flat, sloping internal wall just inside the lay (is this the vamp?)
Does anyone know what this signifies? If it's a batch number it could help us determine age; if it's a model number it might predict characteristics.
What is the point of putting it in such an inaccessible place? You can't read it unless you saw the mp. in half! The only way to do it is to take an imprint with Blu-tack and read it backwards!
The only major differences I can see easily are in the length of the slot.
I'm mystified.
