Hi Mark
Have you ever contemplated "making" (god I hate that word) people register to be members of this bulletin board - requiring sign in and password for verification?
Just curious - your colleague in Sydney (and admirer).

If it was, I'd hope it'd be free registration, open for all. Otherwise I'd have to leave. Playing the clarinet in high school doesn't bring much expenses.
Not that I think the simple idea of regristration is a bad idea. I actually think that it would be a good idea. Considering one could be suspended for a determined period of time where his or her password doesn't work if they do something wrong.
However... doesn't that mean more work for Mark? That sounds hard to keep up.

"Registration" smacks of "regimentation". I have been following this BB for 3 years, since taking up the instrument. To me the beauty of it is in the freedom of access to anyone interested, with incredibly diverse contributors. To turn this into a pedantic, restrictive forum would be a step backward and a great shame, suited perhaps to those who like to be regimented, or who like to regiment. I think Mark runs a tremendous show; I don't know how financialy, but many thanks to the sponsors and their help in this regard. Long live free access !!! Karel.

If things ever got out of hand with bad language or such I'd consider requiring that you'd have to have a valid email to post but things have never gotten even close to that point. I have banned a couple people for very short times in the past for abusive language - maybe twice in 3 or 4 years.

Yes - I guess that was were I was leading - I certainly did not intend that "registration" was a fee-based requirement, though, I would consider this seeing as I do get a lot out of the bulletin board.

Diz, when I "voted" for free access, I did not mean free financially, though that is a bonus. I meant free, as in unhampered by little bureaucratic access gates and filters. I thought musicians were by and large "free spirits".

yes - I totally agree with you here - but if, as MC points out, someone says something offensive there is no way of "banning" him/her if there is no accounability - I see no problem with people having an "identity" but I do have a problem with people not being responsible for their comments.

diz, it seems as though you are trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.
In society in general, people complain about new laws that are continually being imposed. If, instead, everyone behaved in a civil manner on their own, additional laws would not be needed. So far, we on this message board have been a fairly civilized bunch and other mechanisms have been sufficient to take care of any problems. Let's hope it stays that way.

Diz, if you re-read Mark's comment, he does say that he has in the past banned contributors for a time; so presumably he already has a mechanism for doing so. Rarely used and rarely needed. I think I would go with "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" principle.

PS: What some find offensive is only their individual judgement, unless we itroduce strict general rules to impose on everyone.
