A friend and I are both looking for some good clarinet duets. We read the Poulenc Sonata for Two Clarinets and we have some transcriptions of Baroque duets. Any suggestions? We are also looking for trios, quartets, and quintets.

There are two Sneezy sponsors who specialize in clarinet duets: Duet Now and JB Linear Music. Also check Luyben Music and Jeanne, who both have on-line catalogs.

Melanie; Sonata by Souffraiu is excellent. Modern, not as hard as the Poulenc, but challenging and fun to play. There are several good duets in the back of the Langenus part 3. The Waterson Grand Quartet is a lot of fun and technical.You might try getting the Souffraiu through Eble Music. If anyone can get it they can. The publisher is Editions Musicales Brogneaux. Belgium I beleive.

You might enjoy one of three versions of transcriptions of Mozart's Duos for Violin & Viola:
the No. 1 in G major transcribed by Lancelot ( in G), the David Hite transcriptions of the G major and the B-flat major (Duos 1 & 2) published by Southern Music and/or my transcription of the
Duo No. 2 in B-flat transposed from the original key of B-flat for B-flat clarinets into the key of C.
My transcription is available on Sibeliusmusic.com, if you're interested. The second movement may be downloaded for free. There is a rather lame duet by Donizetti (Eulenberg) and there is a concerto for two clarinets and band by Burnet Tuthill that is available with piano accompaniment, I believe. Carl Fischer has published a pair of Duets that were attributed to Mozart, but Einstein shot that down with information that they were the work of Andre, Mozart's publisher. Yet, they are great and fun to play and they're in the Fischer catalog.

Melanie - there are numerous duets in the Lazarus Books - Book 3 in particular has the more challenging ones - I've played many of them and loved them.
