I would like to report that I have just received and play tested some very nice reeds from the Davie Cane Co. They sent me a sample pac containing eight reeds in quarter strenths from 3.0 to 4.75. The 3.75 and 4.0 seemed about right for my Kaspar #14 mpc and I am going to play them against my usual V-12s to see how they compare. For your sample pac (if they are still available), the website is http://www.daviecane.com I requested the Gonzales "For Our Friends" cut which resemble some Zondas that I remember trying some years ago--13mm tip, 10mm base and with V-12 style cut. I plan to order a couple of boxes of 3.75 & 4.0 after posting this info. Good Clarineting!!!! (they also provide tube cane, blanks and double reeds stuff as well)

I went to the website, and they are out of most strenghts. I emailed to find out when they will have more. Let you know with the update.

I just tried a box of 3.75s and was very pleased with the results. They too were the fof model. They seem to work particularly well with the Zinner blank mouthpieces.

Great reeds and great cane. I like the 4.5 on my Kasper mouthpiece. I made some reeds out of their cane and they turned out very good.

In January, I wrote my (positive) impressions of the Gonzalez "For Our Friends" reeds.

http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=67098&t=67062

My opinion has not changed. They seem to last, and do not just reach their peak and quickly die. The quality of cane seems high, and from the few boxes I have now tried, the consistancy is quite good. Also, at least from my small sampling, I did not find any "miscuts", green cane, or dark brown cane.

Would I permanently change from Vandoren? Probably not, but will definitely keep a few always prepared as a "first line of defense".

My one complaint: The name. The "For Our Friends" monicker should be scrapped for something worthier, as per the quality of these reeds...GBK

Well, for anyone interested, when I emailed them, I got a response the next day. They are getting a shipment of reeds in tommorow, and there are still some sample packs. I'm really looking forward to trying them.

3? 3.25? 3.5? 3.75? 4? 4.75? 5?

I wish this new reed company well but what about 1 1/2 to 3? Not everybody wants to use a plank of wood!

Mark:

The info that I got from Davie Cane indicates that they make reed strengths from 2.5 on up to 5.0 in both of their Mozart Handmade Reeds and Gonzalez "For Our Friends Only" cuts. In my sample pac, there was a noticeable difference between each of the quarter strengths, the 3.0 being quite soft and the 4.24 being too hard, for me that is. I suspect that you would find the 2.5 strength to your liking--at least, have them send you a sample pac and try them out (mine was a freebe). After trying their 3.0 "FOB", I can't imagine anyone needing anything softer (IMHO only) Good Clarineting!!!!

I've also been pleased with reeds from Davie Cane, both the Gonzalez (thin blank) and Mozart (thick blank) models. They are very consistent, with only one or two in a box that need extensive work.

Also, they have shipped very quickly. I've made two orders, and both have come in less than a week.

Best regards.
