It is the end of February and time for the annual eBay roundup of metal
clarinet auctions. 103 auctions closed in February, including one for four
horns and one for two. Nine auctions were re-listings of horns seen
earlier in the month. Thirteen auctions got no bids, seven for
restorable student models with minimum bids of $50 or less.
Roughly half of the instruments were sold with trade names that may or
may not indicate who made them. (38 different names.) Most of those
were made in the U.S. and many of those probably were made by
a handful of American companies. I did spot 14 identified as or
clearly made by Conn; 6 by Pedler; 6 by Bettoney; 5 by Holton;
5 by H.N. White; 3 by Buescher; and, 3 by LeBlanc.
Twelve of the auctions featured horns that were collectible or
originally sold as better than student quality. (More than I saw in December
and January put together and about the same as last year.)
A Selmer full boehm and a gorgeous Silver King led the show.
A metal eefer and a repairable albert also topped $300. I bought the
Buescher with an adjustable barrel, better quality keywork and lots of
plating wear. A good deal at $103? Not sure.
67 auctions were for student models that looked to be repairable.
The average high bid was about $63 for these - - about the same as
last year. 16 of these student models went for
under $50 and 18 went for between $50 and $60.
6 horns appeared to be missing barrels and 3 looked badly damaged.
These 9, averaged $45. GO FIGURE.

jim -
Thanks for your post. I bought the "1508337692 3 $76 Pedler Hoosier Clarinet w/Hard Case-NICE-NR". (I am from the state of Indiana, USA, which is called the "Hoosier" state. It was purely a sentimental purchase.) I based my bid on your last post of this kind, passing up several earlier offerings. The instrument is not only restorable, but actually playable, with only one loose pad, and really has some nice etching on the bell.
Thanks again.

I'm totally amazed. I bought a Pedler a couple of years ago for $100.00 and restored it. It sounded very, very nice. I resold it on eBay about 6 mos. after that and don't remember what the guy paid me, but I did loose money. That's typical for me. I've tried to keep up with my average loss--but it's way too depressing.

Interesting survey,Jim. One man's junk is another man's prize. "Collectible" is interpreted differently by different people. I bought one because it came from a town where I used to live. It cleaned up nicely and is almost an objet de art or however it's spelled. I also learned something about Frank Bettoney...or was it Fred.

Dave: that was his brother. The founder was either Frank or Fred and he was first chair flute in a Boston orchestra in the early 1900s. F.Bettoney bought out Wurlitzer and then Cundy to form the Cundy Bettoney Co. which by 1920 was the largest u.s. mfr. of wind instruments....boston area.

Dave Barry says that collecting is a disease.
My definition of 'collectible' is that it was sold as a professional quality instrument, or
that it has some very unusual features, or both. I guess i used the term from my very
narrow perspective, of 1) horns that usually fetch a relatively high price, and 2) ones
that I wouldn't mind owning. There are a few of us who always seem to be interested
in the same sorts of horns.
I know someone who collects all metal clarinets made by Pedler -- and there were a great many models made, most of which were student quality, and many of which didn't have
the Pedler name on it. For him, those are collectible horns.
The Selmer full boehm, if restored, likely will play a lot better than the average student model,
and even though it sells for more, might be 'good buy' as a practice horn, for jazz, etc. However, A student model may be a good buy for someone who wants an interesting horn for display, a horn for marching band, etc. (HOWEVER, all of the silver ones tarnish if left out.)

Did anybody ever determine if that "C Melody" clarinet was actually in the key of "C"?
