I have two Moennigs (65 and 66 mm). The bore has been adjusted so there are less tuning difficulties. If you are considering buying one, you should probably also try the Chadash (also adjusted to avoid tuning difficulties).

The famous repairman Hans Moennig discovered that when he tapered the bore of the barrel so it was a tiny amount (a few thousandths of an inch) smaller at the bottom than it was at the top, this focused the sound and improved the intonation. See David Hite's site at http://www.jdhite.com/mouthpieces/shop1.htm for more. Moennig died years ago, but Buffet and other makers produce barrels with his taper.
Guy Chadash also makes reverse-taper barrels, with a slightly different taper from Moennig's. Chadash barrels are also available from Buffet or from Chadash directly.
A good barrel can make a tremendous improvement in tone, response and intonation. However, the best makers match the barrel to your mouthpiece, your clarinet and your embouchure and preferences, so you are best off going to a maker -- say, Chadash -- for custom work. A custom barrel can cost over $100, but it's worth every penny.

I always use a Moennig barrel with my clarinets. They make a huge difference in my sound and intonation.

Hans Moennig was a very innovative and famous clarinet repairman. I did not have the pleasure of meeting him, but some of my older colleagues and my former teacher knew him well. I have used both Moennig and Chadash barrels, and yes, they really do make a difference. Like everything else, though, it's the right combination of things. The reeds that fit the mouthpiece, the mouthpiece that matches the bore of the barrel, the right length barrel, etc.

You know any sound emitted from clarinet consists not of sigle tone but of many harmonics. You might have seen Stradivalius vilolin has very complexed harmocics elements on Oscilloscope. These barrels give these complexities to your sound.
By the way as written in J&D Hite site, it was invented by the collaboration of Ralph McLane and Hans Moenig.

Albert Alphin is one of the people out there that checks the Moennigs he sells and will rebore them to make sure that they are the proper dimensions.
