Hello,

I am looking for a good beginner clarinet that I can put on my instrument selection list along with the E-11. Has anyone had any experience with other clarinets that go well with the E-11? I am also open to other suggestions as what kinds of clarinets to use with beginner students.

Thanks,

B. Gresham

The E-11 is a fine instrument but I wouldn't call it a beginner instrument.

I would say a Buffet B-12, LeBlanc Vito, Selmer CL301 or CL311, and Yamaha YCL20.

These are what I call beginner instruments. They are all plastic. It depends on the age and maturity of the player whether they are up to dealing with a wooden instrument. I have seen youngsters literally misjudge where the instrument is and hit the stand. This is not great for a plastic or wooden instrument but I'll take my chances that the plastic will just be a little scratched up.

Also, many young players need to march football or parades and a good old plastic instrument is what is called for in that situation.

As I was told, when shopping for my clarinet on a VERY limited budget...buy the best one you can afford. Later, when you can afford to decide if you want to get a better one. My clarinet is a student ebonite model from a non namebrand maker but I enjoy playing it as if it were the same that Pete Fountain uses.

LOL, my wife assures me that if I can play as well as Pete Fountain that she will find a way buy me one like him....until then !!

I've had a plastic Yamaha clarinet since 7th grade, when my parents finally bought me my own. Plastic is best for beginners because, as mentioned above, if they do end up doing a marching band they don't have to deal with getting another clarinet; plastic ones are also a lot more durrable from what I hear, and you don't need as much upkeep to keep it in decent condition as you would a wooden one.

Take it from experaiance, I started in 5th grade and I had no respect for instrument upkeep...mainly because they didn't teach it to us...so plastic is best.
