I don't often play the bass cl. and normally borrow an old Selmer when I have to. This time it's not available and I've got a Buffet.
There are several things about it which seem annoying.
Why is the spike so short? It doesn't reach my mouth without finding an uncomfortably low chair, or resting it on something.
You can't flatten the middle B by closing the bottom C or C sharp since they're all linked together.
It has lots of fiddly plastic adjusting screws which have to be just right to make it work. Surely these shouldn't be necessary?
Anyone else have other complaints?

What's wrong with the new Buffet bass? Easy! It's too expensive for me. I want one, brand new, for $2000. Am I dreaming, or what?

It could happen, Dave. That is, if someone buys one and doesn't like it and is willing to take a loss on it.

Brenda,
Thanks for the encouragement! I won't hold my breath (I don't play well when I'm turning blue), but I'll keep my eyes open. Sorry for the digression from the original questions.

Jez said, in part:
"Why is the spike so short? It doesn't reach my mouth without finding an uncomfortably low chair, or resting it on something." Maybe that's the answer Jez, don't blow down the spike! Turn it around and blow in the other end.

If he turned it aroung, then maybe he would have trouble reaching the really low notes. All kidding aside (sorry BG) I have fallen in love with the new Buffet 1193 bass and somehow, I am going to get one--even if it means paying IMS their asking price of $5100.00. The one I played on two weeks ago was absolutely in tune throughout the range with a big marvelous sound to low C and great reponse on the usual problem notes above the staff. Too bad someone else beat me to it--well, back to my Bundy for now.......
Bottom line--I like the Buffets and had no problem with the short peg. I am vertically challenged and the fit was fine. Good Clarineting!!!!!!!!

The spike shouldn't be the most expensive part, it should be quite easy to exchange it with a much longer one...

I have had some problems playing with the Buffet Bass myself. I agree there are a lot of linkage problems and adjustment screws to deal with. As I look over the mechanism, I can't help but think "why did they..." but alas this is not my own personal Bass so I cannot make the changes.
