 Vacation practice suggestions

Hello folks,

Any suggestions for practicing while traveling with whole clarinet in tow or not in tow?

In recent years, I've started to leave it at home - and enjoy my vacation. I also found that actual management playing was unrealistic unless I was staying with a friend, or found an open university.

I just would like to keep the muscles in shape at the minimum. I'm in hotel to hotel for two and a half weeks in Rome and Florence.

Suggestions?

(One of the few advantages of a being brass player.)

I always think instruments sound differently in different climates.
In Italia's dryer climate, I believe they will sound brighter. If I go there, I would take my flute and make an experiment to see whether I sound like a Severino Gazzelloni.

To keep your chops up over vacation, all you need to do is take Paganini's Caprices (transcribed for clarinet of course!) with you and play #24 all the way through three times a day...........

For that trip, how about taking a "Combat" Clarinet and playing it in the great outdoors? Don't know about Florence and Rome, but if they don't hassle street musicians, you might even pick up a few coins. What fun!

Cute, Hiroshi. Has anyone dared practice in the hotel room?

Combat clarinet is armed...Although, I know in Canada you need to apply for all sorts of permits. I don't know about Italy.

Uhh, actually, Marie, I meant one you can play outside without fear of destroying it. My Vito, for instance. Sounds pretty good, and if it gets hit by a beer truck, well, that's life.

Yes, I do know what you mean. That is why I said it is armed...like a tank. I have a sturdy plastic Yamaha that if a beer truck ran into, well, I may be out $75 bucks, but it'd be one tasty tip!

My teachers reccommend that if you don't have enough time to practice, 15-30 minutes a day to keep your embouchure muscles warm is enough. I will be going to Europe for a month in the summer. I am not sure what to do either, as school starts up a month after I get back!

I ofen practice in hotel or resort rooms during mid-day (when everyone else is down at the pool having fun) with no complaints from neighbors. I limit my practice to "maintainence" only--scales, etudes or a favorite solo--and not necessarily "improvement" as in learning new high notes of multiple tongueing skills at the expense of having some vacation fun myself. Another thing I like to do is make advance arrangements with local musical groups to "sit in" at a rehearsal--playing with others is more fun anyhow and it is a great way to meet the "locals" and pick up things like places to see and eat. This is one website that has local bands info. http://www.afn.org/%7Eencore/ Good "vacation" Clarineting!!!!!

Marie, since you are a brass player, I understand you are reserved to play an instrument in a hotel room. But you can play flute,(if it sounds beautiful)), anywhere. My favorite pieces are Cantilena of Poulanc flute sonata and Bach A moll flute partita.

My old teacher - Bonetti used to be a principal in the Sydney Symphony - would NEVER take his instrument on holidays, in fact he would always have a total break during the vacation period. On his return, before first rehearsal for the new season, he'd play scales and arpeggios endlessly to get his fingers etc back into shape. I think it's alwaqs good to have a break from playing - if to "refocus" and clear your mind.
