The Legere's play mor elike a reed-response good, sound a bit edgy, but better than 70 % of cane reeds if you choose the right one. Won't replace your favorit plank of wood, but that is not what it is for- Phil

I only use synthetic reeds on bass and I prefer the Fibracells to Legere. The sound is not bad and they never squeak.

Robert, what strength Fibracells do you use for bass, and with what mouthpiece? And how do they work across the whole range, including altissimo? I'd also appreciate any observations about the Legere reeds on bass, in comparison to Fibracell.

I use an unusual set-up: a very open Charles Bay mouthpiece (.100" tip) with a Powertone tenor sax stick-on baffle to give it a little more edge and power, a Fibracell medium tenor sax reed, and a Bonade regular ligature. With this set-up I have a good dynamics range over the entire compass of the horn. I can play softly in the altissimo and very loud at the bottom and vice versa. The downside is that the tone is a little edgy and cutting; okay for jazz, not so good for classical. But I think as I get used to playing the fibracells (I just recently started using them) I'll be able to darken or mellow the tone somewhat and still get plenty of power when I want it. I tried the Legeres and found them a little more like real cane than the Fibracells but unfortunetly this means they're also more prone to chirping and squeaking, a common problem on bass. Since I started using the Fibracells I virtually never squeak anymore.

Robert, is there any great difference in projection in using a Fibracell medium Bass clarinet reed vs a Tenor Sax reed. I thought they were the same, just labeled differently to confuse the unwary. I have used the fibracell medium bc reed with Grabners CXBB and a Peter Spriggs lig and I rather like the results, but I don't play for others (yet) so am not sure if it is just my faulty ears (double hearing aids).

There's not much difference between the bass cl. and tenor sax reeds. Tenor sax is maybe a little brighter but I've only tried one bc reed and a couple tenor sax reeds. The tenor sax reed is slightly longer, maybe 1/64 of an inch.
