 bad taste

I have a new Vandoren b45 mouth piece. It tastes like a goodyear radial. Is there a cure/solution/trick to remedy this problem? Thanks to any and all.

sk8terchick, I am unable to make any suggestion, as I have never tasted a Goodyear radial. I shall remedy that deficiency over the weekend, try one or two things, and have some comment for you by Monday.

Before this tread ...er, thread... goes off on too much of a tangent, I'll ask if you've tried washing the part that goes in your mouth with a little dish soap and water? (Don't get the cork wet.)

By the way, I assume you aren't directly tasting your mouthpiece since your tongue should be touching only the reed, not the mouthpiece. Perhaps the brand-new mouthpiece is outgassing some more volatile components that your are smelling or tasting. If this is the case, it might be a good idea to let it set in the open air of the room for a while to let the gases diffuse rather than enclosing the mouthpiece up too tightly in your case.

We've had 2 such mouthpieces come here (new) in the past 2 years and had no such taste (or odor) with either, perhaps it is pecular to the specific one you bought, if the taste doesn't dissipate soon, I'd look to return it.

Maybe you are smelling the odor rather than tasting it. Sounds like an incompletely cured mp. Take it back.

Making fun of such a serious problem is, IMHO, in bad taste . . .

Oops . . .

I had a HS** Selmer with the same problem and I agree it is unpleasant and never got any better. I just got rid of it. Take it back to where you got it. It is probably as others have said incompletely cured and inhaling rubber odours is probably not good for you. I didn't think that a sk8er chick would play on something as incredibly unhip as a B45.

Well, as promised, here are my Monday comments:

I cut a tiny piece of rubber off a Goodyear radial and chewed on it for about five minutes. Doublemint it is not. That taste is *reeaallly* bad, and that's from a (we hope) fully cured tire. Couldn't get rid of it with full strength Listerine mouthwash or Tabasco sauce dashed on a slice of onion. It was pervasive and awful. I cannot imagine any way to destroy the flavor. After this personal subjective review of your difficulty, I suggest you dump the mouthpiece.
