If you're talking about a recording of the arrangement for military band/wind symphony ... can't help. But if it's a recording of the orchestral version - if you just head on down to your nearest CD shop - you'll probably find quite a few different versions in the classical section. Notably, Andre Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra recorded the work in the 70s (I think) fantastic, also there are some magnificent north american versions, too - including the New York Philharmonic with Bernstein.

Sir Adrian Boult specialized in The Planets. He recorded first on 78s and again every time a new technology came out -- 33s, stereo, open-reel tape, quadraphonic, and I think even digital. He had a special feel for the piece, as did the British orchestras he conducted.
I'm sure that band arrangements have been recorded. Try Walking Frog Records at http://www.walkingfrog.com/, which specializes in band music.

Have you listened to the "New Queens Hall Orchestra" version - on "authentic" instruments - I like it a lot. You're right about Boult - he certainly had an affinity for Holst's wonderful score.

The U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band has a great recording of this on one of their CDs. The CD is called Frontiers. I'm not sure if it's for sale or if it's just a recruiting recording, but if it is not available for sale, your band director can get it for you, or you could call a recruiter in your area and ask about it. If it's not for sale, it's free... and what a better way to get a great CD?

Fitting for this 40th anniversary of the John Glenn flight, you might rent the film "The Right Stuff" which features "Mars" from The Planets during most of the sequence on the Glenn flight. (The film is well done, but be aware that the film and the book took some liberties with history.)

The New Queens Hall Orchestra version referred to by Diz features Martel Clarinets (made c. 1910) played by Keith Puddy (who plays them from preference where he can). It is very good, though I would opt for Boult as per Ken's recommendation. His versions are variable though. The Vienna version (Boult) has just been reissued on CD. I have it on LP and it is rather unusual to say the least. The preferable one in my view is his 1978 version with London Phil. He was 89 when he set it down, but it is very satisfying.

One version of the Planets I definitely DON'T recommend is one I took part in some years ago. As an April fool's day charity concert the orchestra I play in did a performance in which no-one was allowed to play the instrument they do normally. There was a good number of people who were quite competent on a 2nd instrument and some who could get by (eg fiddlers playing viola) but some just had a go on something else. The result was very funny. A very committed performance with excellent rhythmic drive but some awful sounds!

at one time, I had 3 33 rpm versions. The Adrian Boult
version was the best. I remember in the Jupiter movement
where a Baritone did a "blat", hopefully that is not on
the newer CDs.....

I translate it this way: "Do as my son does and rip it off the net." That is, find a version of The Planets on the Internet and download a copy.
Of course, in a state of sobriety (does California qualify?) that's only recommended if the piece in question is not covered by copyright.

Pardon me for being a prude, but as a supporter of professional musicians I find any suggesting of "ripping it off the net" highly offensive - every time a piece of music is stolen (and I'm not infering you're doing this) it means that a struggling musician isn't paid her/his royalty dues. Simple. This is even worse in the case of orchestral music where there are fare fewer CDs sold as related to "pop" music.

I agree with you. Too many people think that everything on the Internet should be free. Somewhere, somehow, some way someone has to foot the bill and too many times with music it's the original artist.
Also reading between the line :-)) of Kieran's post, I seem to hear disapproval--mixed with resignation that that's now the way of the (cyber) world. I think he was being wryly satiric, not serious.
