How test a note to see if in tune?
Author: howard miner

I have a new clarinet which I am pleased with, however, I sense that the upper "G" is slightly flat. I am not sure how good my ear is, is there a way to test this note? Maybe visit a piano tuner's shop? Do music stores have this ability?
Is it unusual to have only one note off key?
What is likely to be the cause?
Thanks, Howard

There are a lot of ways to go about this, but the easiest would be for you to get a chromatic tuner, which will tell if any note is sharp or flat and how close it is to being in-tune. Hope this helps!

Your ear is probably as good as anyone else's, Howard. It's not unusual for one note to be off a little (more than others), even with new instruments. Since it is a new instrument, take it back so the repair facility at the store so they can 'tweak' it for you. They have tuners and stuff just for that purpose :)

Decent tuners are available for under $20, check the big mail order houses on the resources page.

CA-20. There has been lots of agreement in some forum that this is a good choice.
It could be caused by the right hand ring key not opening far enough, but I'd expect that to also affect below-the-stave C, possibly giving it (and maybe first line E), a fuzzy sound.

If this key does not open far enough it could well be because somebody has installed a pad that is inappropriately thick. Very common, including by manufacturers.
