A small piece should only be a few dollars. Be sure they dress the edges and slightly round the corners for safety. 1/4 inch plate is what you're looking for. Should it crack or chip, discard it and get another (again for safety, raw glass edges are SHARP!)

I just bought two at a glass store (6x4, 1/4 inch thick) with the edjes done for about $5.00. What a deal! (; Try places that do auto glass maybe.

I know of no reason that 1/4 inch thick "plexiglas" OR "Lexan" won't be just as good and it's safer.

Bob -
Plexiglas/Lexan roughens up with use, particularly if you put the reed on it and use sandpaper on the vamp. I'd stick with glass. The reason I got mine 1/2" thick is so it would survive bumps and wouldn't slide around.
I can't imagine even a 9" x 12" x 1/2" glass would be more than, say, $20. I don't remember what I paid for mine many years ago, but it certainly wasn't much over $10.
Best regards.

Ken: I agree the plastic can roughen after a time but then you have the other side...and...you can cut the plastic at home. Wow, half inch thick plate glass!

I didn't know 1/2" thick glass existed either, until I went to my friendly local glass shop and asked for the thickest piece they had. I was impressed, too, when I saw it.

Ask for 'tempered' glass; it's smoother(flatter) than regular window glass. Maybe they'll take pity on you, treat you extra nice because you're trying so hard to sound knowledgeable. Who knows? - they might give you a piece of half-inch thick glass just to get rid of you. Don't forget to say, "Thank you". Smile.
