Did Les Brown play clarinet? I didn't think that he did but I thought I saw something on TV the other day that may change that thought.

According to his bio at www.bandsofrenown.com, Les Brown "mastered the classical clarinet" while studying at the Ithaca Conservatory.

Les Brown may have perfected "classical" clarinet, but I think it was Abe Most who did the clarinet work with his band. This info from a music hostory prof at George Peabody College for Teachers in 1969. His name was Don (can't remember last name I think it was Southerland) who played 3rd Alto sax with the band. Don was an oboe major from Curtis, no job when he graduated, joined Brown's band. Told an anecdote about passing the Tommy Dorsey band at the Blackhawk Grill in Chicago. The guys on the Dorsey band were joking about the skinny little band boy (set up stands and music) who also sang flat with the band. The kid drove Dorsey nuts by just staring at him everytime he played. Guess who?????

Abe did the solo clarinet work from maybe 1940 through 1943 or 4. The Les Brown Band recording of "Mexican Hat Dance" in 1941 did not have Abe credited with the solo (as was promised to him) - but it was Abe who played it.

Just saw a big band short on Turner Classic movies showing Les playing clarinet. He could apparently solo with the best of them. Too bad he didn't do more solo spots on record.

Correction to my previous post. The history prof was Don Castle, not the other name I gave. Sorry, but I had a senior moment.
