I've been reading some, very entertaining i might add, topics and thought i'd toss this one out. Some chic says her overhauled Selmer Signet 100 is worth almost $3000. I emailed her and said she'd be lucky to get $350, which she promptly responded to with her thoughts, most of which are not reprintable on this forum...Anyway, here's the item # if you're interested in a chuckle or three - 1513346477. It's astonishing how many RARE Selmer Signets or 1400's i see every day on ebay, maybe i should upgrade.

What is her e-mail address?
I will blow some smoke up her chimney.
Please spell chic as chick, as over in London we regard chic as in modern, in fashion.

Her Email is podgee183@hotmail.com, which is currently listed at $699 with no bids and a day left to go, i've got it on my auction watch list just for laughs. Sorry about the chic thing, i would have said crazy old nut job but i didn't want to potentially offend any crazy old nut jobs who might be reading. : )

Hmm, then i'd feel really stupid if that's the case....I did read something about a "base clarinet" but nothing about an overpriced Signet.

Not that I especially want you to feel stupid, Tamara, but...

I do apologize. I clicked on the link you replied with and was happily rewarded with a few good chuckles. I see that she took out the bit of the $500 reed and inserted the appraisal of $3000 which one of YOU guys probably sent to her lol, she says "a looker emailed me and said that their clarinet similar to mine was appraised at $3000" or something like that, i pulled that from memory. And i thought i found something knew, darnit. Oh well.

My advise is "steer clear" of dealing with such a person. Especially if they've possibly been "partaking" of the local "Moon Shine."

I just emailed her and got back the most vitriolic response...if you'd like, you can contact me offline and I'll send it to you. I'd copy and paste, but I'm sure what this person had to say would offend everyone's delicate sensibilities.
Sheesh...some people's children!
(Just a teaser...I was blamed for the stupidity of children in America today. How bout that?)

Plwease Y'all remember that the Psalmist wrote:

So, be not so rude please! It's ok to be "rude" to a "Sneezy" you know and love, but not stangers--they don't understand.

Dekay was a very small mouthpiece manufacturer in Southern France. His main competitors were Chedeville and Lelandais.
He was known for his highly original facings.
$999 sounds like a steal.
Oh, one last "fact" - Dekay's first cousin was PT Barnum...GBK

Lee, you eBay and mine seem to be different. Wonder how that happens. I find that Dekay has naver listed any sale on eBay, in the past or now, and there is no $999.00 mouthpiece that eBay wants to tell me about. Do you have any additional information?

Oh, hey, Lee, you meant the name of the maker, not the Seller! My mistake.

I've seen a number of weird items from taxijazz. But notice that while his "buy it now" price is outrageous, you can get into the bidding at a mere 96 cents.
It would be even more amusing if his reserve turns out to be ... 96 cents.

And going back to the Signet clarinet for a moment: The seller says that the mouthpiece is wooden. So (1) did Selmer make wooden HS* mouhtpieces and (2) are these particularly valuable?

I don't know anything about mouthpieces, but i would think if the wooden mouthpiece was such a featured item in this luxury box full of clarinet goodies there would be a close up shot of it. I've never seen a wooden mouthpiece, but from looking at the pics you can't tell wood from rubber. So i think someone should request a close up of the mouthpiece, i've already emailed her once so another from me wouldn't get answered i bet. Would one of you be so kind as to harrass her for a shot of it? Who knows, it's probably not even wood, most likely some crusty hard rubber thing.

I looked at the ebay item which started off this thread. Instead of some crazy old nut, I find a woman who bought a clarinet for her daughter, the daughter only played it once and now she wants to get some of her money back. The clarinet needed to be reconditioned and she ended up paying $120 for it. Setting the price at $599 is her attempt to recoup the cost. This story may not be familiar to you dedicated clarinet players who have never had to sell an instrument you know nothing about. But you should not poke fun at a woman just because she has an unreasonable idea of the value of her instrument. SHe'll find out soon enough when nobody bids for it. She didn't claim it was worth $3000 dollars anywhere. SHe just said that clarinets sell for anything from 600 to 5000 dollars and she was starting the bidding on this one at 599.
What I think is sad is that the daughter only played it once. But hopefully the daughter has gone on to make plenty of music on the viola.

No, but she did claim that someone emailed her and told her that a clarinet they had which was very similar to her was appraised at $3000. I do think the music store lied to her about the estimated resell value of it, it was suggested by a posting on here that they did this to get her to end up selling it to them in the end, when she couldn't get the *full* value of it elsewhere. A music store told me that they retailed the Selmer Prologue at $3200 which is a slight exaggerationg i do belive and i ended up talking them down to $950 in the end...they've been known to inflate, in my experience anyway. I think she listened to what the guys at the shop told her and went with it, which is what anyone would do in her situation i would imagine. Whoever mailed her and said their similar horn was worth $3000 must have been goofing on her and that i do believe is admonishable, but starting a thread and poking a bit of playful fun isn't so bad. And it's started off at $699, not $599. Who's safe to poke fun at anymore? Stuffy old clarinet players have to get their kicks from *somewhere* ebay is just a good a place as any. I still enjoy the 'base' clarinet thread now and then.

I dunno. Call me a skeptic, but it seems like an awful lot of those Ebay descriptions begin with "I bought this for my kid..." True, it's a common situation, but I'd watch out for multiple clarinets by the same seller. Either they're trying to tug your heartstrings to get at your wallet, or they've got more kids than J.S. Bach.

I used to play first base in my concert band. Tried to hit a home run with my instrument, and the director got upset and had to auction the horn on Ebay as one slightly cracked bass croquet mallet.

She's also modified the listing a few times...you will notice that her stunningly detailed treatise on the $500 REED is no longer a part of the description...

Well, she had changed the '$500 reed' to 'wooden mouthpiece' which has now disappeared altogether, so she does seem to be open to the possibility that her initial description was incorrect, and is making some effort to change it. You (Josh) said she was quite nasty in her response to your inquiry. I'm wondering if she perceived your note to be nasty or condescending?

I just took another looksie at the listing in question...with 40 minutes to go she's knocked $100 off the asking price and changed the heading from "very RARE!" to "very NICE!" The appraisel of $3k is also not to be found. And Josh - thanks for the forward, i was wondering who was responsible for the decline in the arts in today's schools, now i know!

I just checked out a Bb Albert system clarinet. It is marked HP B. Maybe if I buy it, I won't have any trouble getting UP to pitch ;-)) Charlie C.
