Shoestring and its many rig uses
Author: David Pegel

I tried out the "shoestring in a clarinet" method to lower pitch. The results were hideous!! Not only did I have a new "G" Clarinet, but only so many notes came out decently, and most of them were so stuffy that you could barely hear them at all. The low notes sounded cool, though.

Then I took the same shoestring and fashioned a ligature out of it. That idea worked better. I've never played on a better ligature before in my life! I need to get some boot lace and fashion a contra ligature as soon as I can.

So what else is shoestring used for?

Yeah, but if you tie them together don't you trip a lot?

Aren't shoelaces the first thing taken from prisoners before being put in jail?

I've heard of a few private studio teachers who suggest that their clarinet majors wear shoes without laces, during those long 4 hour practice room sessions on the Nielsen.

Just in case.... GBK

Wasn't the string down the clarinet supposed to be just regular "string", not "shoe"?

That would explain the overshoot, playing it in G instead of A

Yeah, a shoelace and a G-string are about the same size ...

Mark --

The younger members can think "thong".

There's still a difference, Todd. Take it from a female..

I forget. Is a G string the highest or lowest string on a violin?

And a thong, of course, is "a strip especially of leather or hide," to quote Merriam-Webster. So, if your shoelaces are leather, they could be considered thongs.

jenna --

That's the wonderful thing about this BB -- the depth of experience of its members! I'm always learning something new.

A thong use to be worn along time ago in England, but they were a bit bigger.

I love the music of "This Thong Is For You."
I think Niel Diamond wrote it.

G-String is the lowest string on a violin.
Imagine sticking one of THOSE in a clarinet!

Or maybe you're thinking of the famous Elton John number?

"My gift is my thong and this one's for you."

Yipes.
